so i got my slef some s13 coilovers with ae86 camber tops

i put them together

but

when i drop the car on its wheels the big bolt on the camber plate pushes up about 10mm

and when i jack the car up it goes back back down

it doenst seem normal

also knocks when driving

is this a failure of shocks or just simply needs proper adjusting

cheers

I'd be going over everything and making sure all the bolts and nuts are tight.

And while the front end is up i'd be also grabbing hold of the strut and give the thing a few good quick push/pulls.

That big bolt that you said about, should be hard up against the camber plate and there shouldn't be any movement up nor down. Its the shock absorber which is possible the knocking sound your hearing.

The only way to do up a shocky nut properly is with a rattle gun and heaps of small pulses of the trigger. It'll pull home.

Sometimes with the weight on the car you can get them up tight with a breaker bar and some vice grips up high on the shock so not to damage the part of the shaft that runs through the shocky seal (not recommended - use a rattle gun).

ive been sort of thinking about it

maybe the camber plates are different thicknesses will check them

i reckon its most deffinatly the bolt moving up and down (which i maight have not screwed all the way down)

making the noise

which sort of makes sence since it does slide up and down when car is lifted

also the big bolt do i tighten it till it wont turn anymore

or just tighten it enough to hold

went over the setup today

all sorted

there is a sleeve about 10mm long that sits between the

top spring plate and the camber plate itself

thats what i had to make

without that the spring top plate pushes right up to camber plate

which also limits the movement of the pillow ball

thats why the big bolt/nut was being pushed up when the car was dropped

good work!

thats exactly what i was thinking as i was reading down the thread.

i had the exact same issue when i used s13 camber tops with my 86 coilovers (sw20 shocks with some coilover kit, otomoto i think).

had to get the local machinist to machine up a small sleeve to take up the slack between the spring top and the camber plate, and allow the camber plate to properly pivot.
