Ruff Idoling Issues

Hey all

 

A friend i know has an 83 Corona - 3 speed auto - stock as a brick block.

 

Hes been having this problem - its idoling very ruff - liturally.

 

Any idea whats cauzing this? - why would it just start to happen all of a sudden?

 

Oh and when it rains - EVERY TIME - the car loozes 3/4 Of its oil - even tho its under cover -

A billion and one things could cause it to idle rough.

rough. idle. spelling people!

let's see what i can pull out my ass in under a minute

 

- different fuel

- clogged idle jet

- carburettor idle circuit out of tune

- timing out of tune

- emissions system broken or out of tune

- vacuum leak

- head needs recondition

- excessive piston ring blowby

- timing chain/belt worn

wow - ok, what would be a good way to diagnose what's the problem - pin point it? or would that require a mechanic to look at it?

 

Oh somting i didnt add in the first post - he says the car actually runs Better[\B] now wile its moving (at speed) !! - Ahh, the poor old corona, neva got the attention like the corolla - the odd child out :|

I had 2 seperate issues with my rolla and its rough idling.

 

1st problem was a leaking manifold gasket. Was loosing compression to the number 4 cylinder.

 

2nd problem was a loose rocker arm on top of the f@$king no# 4cylinder (its a curse that hole in the block) cause the inlet valve to not seal properly.

 

Just some other thoughts to ponder.
