Twinky Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Taking out my inlet/exhaust manifold and coolant has started to leak out of the rear - top most bolt hole. So the last bolt towards the rear that both the inlet and exhaust get mounted to. I am able to squish the radiator hose and squirt coolant out of the bolt hole...... I wouldn't say that's normal? Could it be a headgasket problem? I'm not using any coolant or leaking any at the bottom, I only noticed it after I took off the manifolds. Again, WTF? Quote
ke70dave Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 (edited) if its coming through the bolt hole...then that suggests a crack between the bolt hole and the water gallery in the head. potentially new head time....or at least welding up and repairing that crack. or since it has been working well for a while, put the bolt back in with some plumbers tape, and see how long it lasts Edited August 11, 2011 by ke70dave Quote
Mic Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Sounds like a crack in the head. I wouldn't put it back together. It probably worked well whilst the bolt was holding it in place as it hadn't been disturbed. But if you try to put it back in, more than likely it will leak. Cheers Mick Quote
altezzaclub Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Nah- c'mon Twinky, slap some sealant onto the thread and put it back together again!! Maybe fill it with epoxy just before you screw the bolt in! If its not cracked then I assume its corroded. The top bolt that fills a factory machining hole just by the one you're talking about leaks very slowly on mine. Never enough to drip, it has a green rim around it from coolant, but I can't get it out or do it up more, it was cross-threaded years ago I think. Quote
KENut Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Maybe someone drilled out a snapped bolt once? Anyway, grub screw + sealant = problem solved? Might have to chop down the bolt a bit Quote
Twinky Posted August 11, 2011 Author Report Posted August 11, 2011 Well I've taken the head off and checked it out visually and there actually isn't alot of meat separating the water jacket to the bolt hole. So I'll slap on some sealant along the thread and it should hold just fine, I was able to stop the leak just by turning the screw in a few turns. I'm just really annoyed with it. I start a simple job and then it just snowballs. Well now that it's all off I guess I'll be fitting my fuel injection setup now. Quote
