Ke20 12Inch To 14Inch Rim Conversion

Hi All, I got a 73 KE20 with 4x100mm stud pattern 12" jelly bean rims, She's got a 4KC, 5speed box and unknown diff. With this set up the speedo is reading 120km/h when I'm sitting on 100km/h. I've been wanting to go bigger on the rim size for a while and this I hope will both look good and drop the RPM's at 100km/h.

 

So Ive bought some 14inch Celica alloys with 4x114.3mm stud patern, these rims came with a 79 celica coupe attached to them. My question is how hard is it to get the 14's from the Celica to fit the Ke20? Now the front seems simple enough just take the hubs off the celica and drop them onto the rolla, but the rear has me a bit more confused. Can I somehow use the complete diff from the sh*tty Celica?

The diff in the Ke20 is a little whiney so I don't mind changing that if needs be.

Find a KE30, get a bees dick machined off the axels and slip them in. Done.

 

For the front, grab KE30/55/70 front disc, calipers and dust covers. Rip the KE20 stuff off, bolt up the later dust covers, use a combination of KE20 and KE30/55/70 bearings - think KE20 inner and later outer - and bolt up.

 

Of course I will have forgotten something, as I did this a loooooooooooong time ago.

 

 

Or you could find some Mazda 14's and bolt them up.

Ke30/55 diffs don't just fit. They are 35mm wider which causes causes scrubbing head aches.

The big issue is the shock absorber mounts. They fix to the spring mount on the 20 diff & to the lower center plate on the 30/55 diff.

 

Its not worth the trouble. Just shortem the 30 axles and fit them to the 20 diff

I'm currently running 75 ke30 jap banjo axles and ke30 front backing plates, rotors & hubs.

 

KE30 axels stick out 10mm further out each side, I'm running 185/60/R14 and it "just" scrapes, so I'm getting the stock axles redrilled at the moment to bring the track in back to original and should be all good.

 

front brake upgrade went right on, didnt need to change bearings or anything,

sorry coln72, forgot to mention have already gotten 5mm taken off each axle, the extra length is from the axle hub to the bearing which has 10mm more length then a ke2# axle.

 

also if you compare a ke30 drum and a ke2# drum you will see the ke30 drum is same diameter but is 10mm thicker in depth, funny though the brake shoes were the same as ke2# items...

The rims we used must of been the right offset to avoid this as we never had rubbing issues, but we only ran 185/65/13's

 

When we tried 205's we had issues one side though. What you said makes sense though as we had no issues with 205's under my '20 with the standard diff and axels, guess the extra 10mm each side gave enough clearance.
