demuire Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 If you're looking to buy a fire extinguisher (to compete or otherwise), check out KMart. They have 1kg Chubb fire extinguishers (CAMS approved with metal bracket etc) for $29.87. As a comparison my 1kg fire extinguishers from Autobarn were $40 each. Or, you can get one of them Supercheap ones, they're a bit cheaper but are 0.9kg and come with a fairly dodgy plastic bracket (I have one in Pinky at the moment). It doesn't seem to specify in the CAMS manual, but I've heard of people being knocked back by CAMS scrutineers before for having plastic brackets... Mind you, if I'm not mistaken Rob has been running plastic brackets for ages and hasn't really had any problems, so I don't know of the authenticity of these other reports... Quote
Medicine_Man Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 I recently purchased a fire extinguisher for my car, I just think of it as a cheap insurance policy, few weeks back on tv a falcon burned out on the side of the highway, the lady had no way to put it out, nobody stopped to help, just think if it was mandatory to have a fire extinguisher fitted to your car car she would have been able to put it out and in turn saved the car from being completely burnt out.. Xany Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 let me say this...... don't WAIT TILL YOUR CAR CATCHES ON FIRE AND BUY ONE AFTER IT!!!! this is me speaking from experience. trust me i know what its like to have your car on fire and have nothing to put it out, other than the shirt on your own back....guys that have spoken to me before and seen the underside of my bonnet have said....."f@$k mate your really lucky".....now that i carry one i havent had a problem..... Super Jamie Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 out of interest, where and how do you guys mount your extinguishers? i'm thinking something real classy, like self tappers thru the transmission tunnel or floor in the passenger side footwell Quote
Medicine_Man Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Passenger Footwell when i get around to to mounting it Quote
Xany Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 on the drivetrain tunnel in the backseat....wasnt room on the passenger footwell.... Quote
irokin Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 on the drivetrain tunnel in the backseat....wasnt room on the passenger footwell.... same location for me Quote
demuire Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 In Pinky I had it bolted to the bolt holding the rear seat in, it was in the rear seat footwell just behind the driver. 2nd extinguisher was mounted in the boot. In Hal I have both fire extinguishers mounted in the footwell just under the seats (drivers and passenger side). Considered mounting it on the drivetrain tunnel in the backseat area, but decided the footwell would be easier to reach, but I think either would be just as good really. I don't like self tappers, I used nutserts instead. I sometimes wonder about how strong self tappers or nutserts are, after all the fire extinguisher isn't exactly light... But that's the way I've seen it done in virtually every car I've seen, so I suppose it must be adequate. Oh yes, also I've seen some people make a plate that goes between the bolts that hold the front seats down, and bolt the fire extinguisher to that. That way you don't need to drill holes in your floorpan etc, completely reversible. Probably the best option for a daily drive car. Quote
demuire Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 It's... Like a big rivet. Except both halves of it are separate, one end being a threaded sleeve and the other being a bolt or screw. The actual "nutsert" is the sleeve, and the nutsert gun squeezes it like a rivet gun squeezes a rivet, and you end up with a threaded hole that you can bolt things to. Very cool. I've used them rather extensively in Hal, holding all sorts of things down including my centre console, my front apron, oil cooler etc etc. They come in M4, M5, M6 and M8 sizes, most of the ones I've used have been M6. Very very cool, but not cheap either. The gun itself is about $80. Quote
Super Jamie Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 ohh you were telling me about them! don't much fancy spending money on a gun, i'll just drill some holes in the metal and use bolts or self tappers :) gearbox boots, brackets, fire extinguishers, this tranny tunnel is gonna be like swiss cheese when i'm done with it :) Quote
demuire Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 Or you can drive up here and use my gun :) Just don't break the arbor (it does happen), or you can buy me a new one :) Another fastener system that is waaaay cool: Zeus fastener Quote
mumblezzz Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Self tappers into the transmission tunnel on the passenger footwell. Quote
Felix Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 went to Kmart and got an extingusher today. the $30 Kmart 1kg fire extinguisher isn't a Chubb. it is a Fireater brand. looks identical to the Chubb/Quell branded one that was $47. it does come with a metal bracket. not sure where i will mount it. maybe under the front of the passenger seat. don't really want to put it in the back of my car for the fear of my curious boys playing with it and setting it off, not to mention standing on it. it has the fill date stamped on the bottom. how often are they supposed to be checked by cams??? have had an extinguisher go off once in the back of my car years ago. was a cheap supercheap one. someone stood on the end and cracked it. what a mess, white shit everywhere. i dragged it out and threw it on the ground where it happened, it killed the grass of this guys front yard. took ages to grow back, he wasn't happy. demuire Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 Don't have my CAMS manual with me, I think it's 3 years. Quote
