  1. Maybe blocked fuel jets in the carb? Or low pressure from the fuel pump? Vac leak would be constant and you'd hear it but not always, sounds like a fuel supply prop to me!
  2. Hey, the tuning of a carb on any motor other than the one it's going to be running on is dodgy, every motor is different! For the price of three trips to your ex mechanic you could of bought a secondhand 32/36 DGAV or the like rebuild kit, adaptor plate and air filter to suit the trouble prone factory carb! Jetting for a 32/36 for a 4AC-4AFC should read as so, Primary fuel jet 125-130, Primary air correction jet 160-170 secondary fuel jet 120-125 secondary air correction jet 175-185 and 45 idle jets for both primary and secondaries, stock everything else! Or leave it stock and change the secondary air correction jet to say a 190 for a quick fix but it'll run a bit rich high up! In Darwin pull out the choke plates and block off the water choke vac hole! Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day! Teach him how to fish he'll eat forever!
  3. Yep Launy, fitter/machinist by trade! That's Tarmac drag strip ain't it where the photo was from and that's 5K turbo?
  4. To put my experience of Nikki conversions to use, i used to own a RA28 Celica brought stocko with extractors then fitted a Nikki from a Datto 280c! Swapped to a 32/36 DGAV but lost power had it checked by a carb recoer who rejetted it but still no improvement! So i swapped back to the Nikki, then Saturday morn when i was at the local wreckers with a mate i noticed a Nikki sitting atop an old Mustard yellow 74 180B, not bolted down! Lifted it up just out of interest as it looked quite big, turned it over and was dumbstruck! Paid $20 for it at the counter and took it home, fiited it within half an hour and went for what i planned a short blocki to check if it was any better! 1/2hr later i returned jumped out in the driveway popped the bonnet and stood there shaking my head! Damn thing went like the stink, in that half hour i'd out run a mild port 12A RX2 and a mild 6cly VH to 100kmphr in a 100km zone! Speeding is Deadly ok!!! So if you want the best Nikki ever made look towards the early 180B and fit a weaker secondary vac spring so the secondaries open sooner! old Gemmi trick!!!!
  5. Yeah, i reckon the Tighe 154 grind hey, but it's a personal choice! I,ve owned cars between 1.3-1.6 with Tighe, Camshaft engineering and Waggot cams! Found all to be of top quality, Tighe cams are hardcore street weekend racetrack options, Waggot are more mainstream with big torque and camshaft engineering are damn good! I built one engine for a 1300 Mazda i owned many years ago in which i used a camshaft engineering cam and the damn thing rev'd out clean to 8500rpm and made a sound like a cross between a die grinder and a 10A and used $20 a week in fuel!!!!
  6. USE A SPLIT DURATION CAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Use a well known cam grinder, give him the best condition stock cam you can and ask him for a split duration cam thats lumpy, ie: intake 25/65 exhaust 30/70+! A cam like that will work well on a non crossflow setup where the airflow though the head changes direction, as it allows the compression chamber to be free of burnt mixture! Which has the effect of allowing more fresh mixture to be drawn in through the inlet tract allowing you to run leaner mixtures with your jetting and keeping chamber temps down! In short terms, more torque, top end power, less fuel and a lumpy idle but no overheating or fowled plugs! Just make sure to get your tune right and do reg services and no probs KO!
  7. Hey, just wanted to start this thread for people to thrash out the possiblities for the K series block head combo's! I know that the 3K pre 75(pre pollution) head is a good swap to the 4K block and that the 3K/4K/4KB short has a double row timing chain and the 4KC has a single! But as alloy heads have the habit of getting brittle over time and the fact that the last 3K/4K pre pollution heads came out in 75 to my knowledge means that they are getting rare! Has anyone fitted a 4KC head to a pre 75 3K short and turbo/supercharged the combo? what would the compression ratio be? What k series short motor is the strongest and what are the best combo's to build a project on shoestring budget and where is each state capital do you track down cheap and/or hard to find parts! Example: Gemini G161 motor, I know it's not a Rolla but stay with me! stock G161 short motor, bored 80thou oversize, stock G181 40thou over pistons, stock pre 75 G161 head shaved 10thou, 28/68 reground cam, stock Nikki carb from a early Datto 180B with weaker vac secondary spring, extractors and 2 inch exhaust, stock 2lt Rodeo 4WD clutch, 4sp box and early van diff! Seen that combo run low 16's down willowbank's quarter and you'd be pushing to spend $25 a week for fuel! I think the 4cly/rotary scene has to get back to it's roots a little and remember the days when you could build a fun ride for less than half the price of a 8cly dinosaur and run them down in the twisties and shoot past them on the brakes! Good to see the big budget builds hey, but getting too far from reality for the average guy/girl! Long live the AE86!!!!!!
  8. 3k pre75 short with 4K pre75 head, K not KC + supercharger from a 4AGEZE blowin thru a carb of some kind(for budget) or perfectune thottle body/s and microtech ECU, Sweetness!
  9. MLP carbs in Melb/VIC has helped me out with heaps of strange kits, they stock the combo S4/T series 40mm/44mm PHH kits for less than $100 each carb depending on postage and he's listed on E-bay but his contact number is 9462 2288 ask for Mick La Porta! Also has anyone held a 40/45mmDHLA/DCOE in one hand and a 40/44mm PHH in the other, big differance! Heaps lighter! Brackets to brace the carbs is also a real good idea to stop vibrations from shaking the things to bits on a lumpy motor! Datto's used Solex's on the late 70's to early 80's factory backed rally cars to good success as well! Still reckon a 40/40DFAV is the sweet option for the best of both worlds but!
  10. Yeah, the dyno results for my mates 4.1 FAL-CON and my 4AC were flywheel converted from 145rwhp and 73rwhp respectively! So 82rwhp from a 1300cc ain't shabby, so much for solex's bein paperweights!
  11. Hey, just wonderin if any rolla fans are in TAS?
  12. Yeah, i agree the 22R is a very underestimated powerplant! Built one for a customer of a place i was workin at a few years ago and was shocked at how damn quick it was, and dat was in a 84 C'rona! Yep you can get some big stick cams and huge valves from the US but shipping them over is costly and the 22R is ain't light so the front susp will need work but still won't ever be as crisp out of a bend as a 4AGE! Also the Carby type is the one to start with if mods are on the list! Besta luck with the idea and hope to see it do a run down the 1/4 mile, should make a mid 14ish standard with rejetted ADM downdraft weber from a 6cly falcon and extractors/exh!
  13. Yeah, not sure bout dat one hey? Damn hard to get parts for Solex but!
  14. My 4AC runs a 32/36 DGAV with 130primary 125 secondary jets and is sweet! Runs down stock BA Fal-con's in the first 3 gears!
