styler Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 i am looking at a mig for doing my project car, single phase, gas, med duty (8mm max) any recommendations? advice? brands? tradetools have a unimig panther for about $500... Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 Spend as much as you can, for $500 you will get one not big enough to do alot of things, 8mm would be an optimistic view. If it is only for panel work though, she'll be right. Personally for the home application i would look at the $1000 mark. Your choice but...... Quote
love ke70 Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 i bought a migmate, for 600 from trade tools to do my ke70 about over a yr n a half ago. works a treat. after a while the heat travels back down the wire and makes the tubing for the wire shrink, so you have to replace that every now and then. get a cheap arc and a cheap mig. don't need a mig to do 8mm stuff. :jamie: and if you have access to one of those big refilable bottles that would be good, coz 30 bucks for this small ones u can't refill is a pain! pozman Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 do not get a gasless mig, they are crap, may aswell use an arc Quote
love ke70 Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 except the gasless ones you can weld panels with, arc you can't. the wire is rather exy tho... Quote
Redwarf Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 Buy the best one you can afford and you won't look back. Gasless sucks arse for weld quality. A decent mig rocks. Mig's are a thing where you really get what you pay for. Quote

You can weld shit 2+ inches thick and then go to something only a few mm thick and still have the same awesome weld quality. On the other hand the cheap 120 amp 240v machine I tried was a royal pain in the arse!! can't get enough heat into the big stuff but didn't adjust fine enough for the small stuff. The one reason I don't own a MIG is because I can't afford one thats good enough to satisfy my needs. I would HIGHLY recommend you do a welding course (adult learning type course, few saturday mornings) at TAFE before you consider buying one. Quote
pozman Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 thats a really good idea, been thinking of doing one my self i used to be an awsome welder, but a few years of the horse really screws you up Quote
love ke70 Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 (edited) weld and grind, weld and grind she'll be right :jamie: hahaha, can you tell i taught myself how to weld? :jamie: Edited November 3, 2006 by love ke70 Quote
