ive been doing some sideways dirt/gravel action this week and i'm sick of my bonnet popping open the first step, because one day it's going to open all the way

 

i got myself some bonnet pins today, i'll probably copy nikki and install them in place of the existing rubber stops

 

fook, what did you use for rubber stops on yours? it was a leaf eye bush chopped in half wasn't it?

 

anybody else got some tips or handy ideas for installing them? i'm guessing measure lots of times and drill small pilot holes for everything first so i get my positioning right. any other help?

Umm... Mine were... Hmm. They were either lower control arm bushes or leaf spring bushes, I don't really know. Else, I've seen people use even garden hose or anything else that fits.

 

When you install them, set them about the correct height and put a dab of oil or grease on the tip, and close the bonnet. Then you'll have a little spot on the bonnet where you need to drill. From there, Have Fun. Drill a hole, close bonnet, see where it's fouling, drill more. Lots of fun. NOT.

 

If you don't want to drill holes in bonnet, you can always make a secondary bonnet restraint out of chain, link, leather belt, whatever really.

cool thanks muchly, i was trying to think of a way to get whiteout or something to stay wet long enough to mark a spot to drill, grease is a great idea! i don't have problems drilling the bonnet, it's just a corolla bonnet, and a couple of holes and more chrome is a f@$kton better than bent plenum, roof, bonnet, hinges, etc etc

is it better to install them so the pins go side to side or front to back or doesn't it matter?

Personally I don't think it matters, but most of the ones I've seen have it going front to back

Hey i just put some on my rolla but didnt go to that much trouble.

 

put the pins in the radiator support panel just inside of the headlights bolted them on and dropped the bonnet and drilled where the little dents where.. they were like nail punch holes and so the drill didnt slip (well a little bigger than nail punch but did the job).

 

easy...5 minute job.

put the pins across left to right. :)

Go on....do a GRR32...you know you wanna :)

that seatbelt thing is amusing, and not as dumb as it looks when you think about it :)

Seat belt is quite common. Also some people use a short length of chain, one end bolted to body and the other end with a carabiner to clip to the bonnet latch. Some people use a leather belt (like the sort of belt you usually wear around your waist), and others use rope. Really up to you what you want to use...

 

Sticker sets, any "performance" shop like GP Cars (where I got mine and Craigs), Revolution Racegear, Xtreme Motorsport etc.

 

Jamie: Are you trying to boost up Mango's street cred? Haha, are you actually going to do any events that require these bonnet pins/stickers/tow hooks etc? :)

 

Also, bear in mind that you *may* get defected for bonnet pins as apparently it poses a danger to the pedastrians that go "bump" off your bonnet.

yeah street cred only :) and maybe if i make my car look like a "proper" track vehicle the feds will leave me alone

I think you'd almost get the opposite reaction...

 

Although strangely enough I've never even once been pulled over in Hal which I'm very surprised about considering I used to get followed home and pulled over weekly in the Lancer that only had a big exhaust and big rims... And windows that were far darker than legal...
