irokin Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Entry in. Need to fix the leak in my diff. =( Blue RTV silicone...great stuff... my sump plug was leaking...so i just covered it in the crap...all good Quote
Teddy Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 i spoze thats one thing race tape / zip ties could not fix :P ! Quote
Redwarf Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Must say I'm not a huge fan of the old Permatex no3, I'm more of a Loctite Bluemaxx kinda guy. This is what the old Permatex Ultra blue has become. Quote
Super Jamie Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 isnt ultrablue a silicon? or am i thinking of a different thing? if i'm going to be removing something alot (eg: tappet cover) it gets permatex 3. if it's going to go on and stay on, it gets silicon (manifold gasket) or hylomar (engine gaskets) Quote
Redwarf Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Yep BlueMaxx is a silicon. You glue on your tappet cover? Mmmm Hylomar, Rolls Royce use it all over there engines... Quote
Felix Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 i've use'd pretty much nothing but permatex no3 for over 10 years. i've never had anyone ever do work on my cars. just machining, roadworthies and wheel alignments. never had problems with leaks where i have used no3. i use it on extractor gaskets, i can change induction setups without pulling the extractors. tappet covers, sump gaskets, even on head gaskets in places. never had a problem with leakage on the dizzy side of the head. perfect for plug tube o-rings, they last for years, just a quick smear when you replace the plugs. thermostat housings, water pumps, even on radiator hoses with the temp probe for a davies craig thermo fan. even used it recycling carb gaskets, it is impervious to fuel.have used it on numerous cars i've owned including other peoples. never had a problem. worst bit about it is that it is messy shit and hard to get off you hands. thinners does the job. Redwarf Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 (edited) I agree it's good gear, I'm just not a fan, probably, as you stated, because I'm a grot and tend to get it everywhere. I'm suprised everyone glues on their tappet covers, I never have, and I've never had leaks. *Shrugs* *edited to remove off topic comment!* Edited August 3, 2004 by Redwarf Quote
Redwarf Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Here's one for you, does anyone know what RTV in relation to sealant is? Quote
demuire Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Oh wow you can use Permatax no3 on ALL of that? Including the exhaust manifold? And there I was trying to buy all sorts of different "goo" for different things... :P Quote
Super Jamie Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 i was surprised you can use permatex 3 on exhaust gaskets too. doesn't apply to you, but the 4k extractor gaskets are concave on one side, i'd be inclined to silicon this side to the head and use permatex 3 on the manifold convex side i think permatex 3 is superior to loctite 3 also, but loctite has a better applicator (sponge as opposed to brush) your head must have good oil return rob. doug, stewart and i have all had tappet gaskets blow out on long sweeping right handers, when the oil builds up in the back corner of the head (because of the engine slant) and eventually you dump about 1.5L of oil onto your extractors :P Quote
Felix Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 i don't use no3 on the exhaust part of the gasket, only around the inlet ports. i had a lot of problems initially getting my seccond hand extractors to seal (bit warped like me). i now use studs and two extractor gaskets. bit of a pain as to remove the extractors i have to drop an engine mount and jack up the engine a bit. not much room in a ke15 engine bay. unfortunately i don't think you can buy the asbestos type extractor gaskets any more, only metal ones which i haven't used as yet. Quote
Super Jamie Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 cafee (with the blue ke30) can get asbestos gaskets, i've still got one he gave me a while back but it's been used a few times and has seen better days :P he's a dealer service manager Quote
Felix Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 when i've had rocker covers let go (twice now), it has been from the nuts loosening right off over time. the no3 keeps it sealed until you add like extended 8 grand doing a burnout or motorkhana test. the pressure/oil buldup in the head popped the seal and lifted the back of the rocker cover. it is only because of lack of attention to detail, ie. laziness not checking the rocker cover nuts in my case on a regular basis. not a problem with the sealant. demuire Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Permatex 3 has an applicator? I bought some blue stuff, one was a Permatex and one was a Loctite and both just came in a simple tube with a plastic nozzle on the end? Ended up using a screw driver to smear it on (couldn't get the bead quite right using just the nozzle) Quote
pro_ke Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 have used permatex ultra blue on everything you could imagine for about the last 5 or 6 years and never had a problem diffs, manifolds, sumps, carbs... Quote
