I've seen an engine that a duck went through, and it was complete rebuild time. Usually they don't do a lot of damage, past blood and boning someones garden. You can usually tell a good bird strike by the roast chicken smell. ive seen an F111 engine that a nut about yay big went thru *holds up a 14mm nut* Can you say complete decimation?? Went through the compressors. Would have been ok if it went throught the bypass. Even then because the ducts are so small they would have had to pull the engine down. Thats why amberleys so strict on FOD. F111s can pickup a nut from about 5m away from the engine ducts. On full throttle they use an entire basketball court of air every second...pretty mind boggling figures. Around your average bedroom every second on idle. Quote
Redwarf Posted August 28, 2004 Author Report Posted August 28, 2004 You'll find anybody around jets are fairly red hot on FOD. 737's from the 300 series on have a reputation for being somewhat of a vacuum cleaner due to the engines being so close to the ground. It's about $10K to $15K US per fan blade for a -7 engine, and there's 28 ( I think) of them. Used to spend a lot of time filing nicks out of fan blades, and when they get too bad you replace them as a pair with the one opposite, to keep the weights similar. You have to run it afterwards, and it pays to keep a close eye on the vibration gauge. Ahh memories!! Quote

When Australia purchased some additional F111s from the united states. They came from Arizona. The base pictured in the above photo. When they got here they had to be completely stripped and refurbished (this is still going on today). There are stories of engineers taking off panels...to find great gob fulls of sand flowing out of them because of the location they were stored. Whats even more scary. They ferried (flew) these aircraft across from america.... Ive been for a tour of the overhaul and modification (F111C to F111G and engine update) wing (now privatised to boeing. Used to be 501 Wing) and they are simply awesome machines. Theres a pin that holds the entire wing to the aircraft body... http://www.f-111.net/RAAF-F-111s-off-the-p...ing_fitting.jpg They are so highly corrosive that even the oil on your skin will corrode them...touch them with bare hands and you might as well throw it out (its some space age metal...don't have the slightest idea what it would remotely comprise of) The ejection system is interesting. Instead of just the seat ejecting (like the conventional ejection seat) the entire cockpit is ejected. Its quite roomy in there and I (at 6"4) managed to fit in the cockpit (ok with a bit of a riggle here and there). http://www.f-111.net/A8-274/index.htm Thats the aircraft I sat in (how could you forget tail art like that!) which was hangared at the time (all flight operational F111s are stored on the flightline).
