Redwarf
Fook, on your car we could do a head replacement in under 2 hours, all things going well. The quickest I've seen a head off and on on a K motor was 45 minutes. Timing chain could take a bit longer, but is also achievable.... anything is possible! :blinks: Cheers R
Medicine_Man
if you really want to get serious do it all in one hit, it would take a weekend though..
demuire
Rob: That quick? Wow... I would assume that would be with a replacement head (and not taking the head off and fixing it up and putting it back on)? Well Jamie recons if I'm going to take the head off and do the timing chain I might as well also spend an extra $100 or so on a cam grind (but that would mean having the car off the road for a bit). Maybe after I get the 35 running - so I have another drive car - I'll fix it all up :blinks: Or maybe I'll do it now... Anyone have a spare cam? :)
Redwarf
If we're fair dinkum it's a day job for everything. And that's with change over head. (Of which I have a number of spares...) I think I have a number of camshafts around, too. No, you can't have my Wade 169x cam. :nono: Cheers R
Medicine_Man
Justin, the head wouldn't take long.not a whole weekend 3 hours tops i was talking about doing the timing chain as well
Redwarf
What's all the excitement with timing chains? I've only ever changed one, and that was when I built a new motor. I have never heard of one letting go.... Cheers R
demuire
Oh wow, hehe maybe after a days work Pinky will go so well that I'll forget about even the KE35! :blinks: I've never heard of a timing chain letting go in a K motor either (have heard of timing belts letting go in other engines, some with rather disastrous results), but I'm guessing all that rattling and stuff can't be good... Who knows, maybe my tensioner's just worn or something. How does one "fix" problems with a valve stem seal? Replace the valve? Rehone the valve seats? Redwarf
I agree with doing belts every 100000k, but timing chains on K motors don't generally give trouble. If it's giving a problem (noisy), no worries, whip it out and change it, but changing it for change's sake is not worth it. Unlike a belt, chains are really "talkative" and will let you know when they flog out. They give you a lot of warning. I'm only trying to save people from work. :blinks: Valve stem seals: they're a little rubber seal that prevents oil from flowing down from the top of the head, down your valve stems, and, therefore out your exhaust. To replace them means removal of valve springs, and, to be honest, if you're going that far, you may as well do the whole head. I have a guy in Redcliffe who does all my heads. irokin
ok whos got a MIG welder (arc too possibly...but might not work) need to weld up some holes in my muffler...muffler putty just aint cutting it would like to put a TIP on there too. Theres a carton of beer in it for ya :blinks:
demuire
I have a MIG, I won't claim I can weld though. But if you want I can give it a go, I've welded all the holes on the 35. I can most probably tack a tip on. Maybe. I dunno :blinks:
irokin
hehehe...can't be any worse than my attempts at arc welding...damn that shit aint easy *curses rods getting stuck to work surfaces* can't really make the muffler any worse than it is...I have a GTi Swift muffler here I can replace it with anyway...just the power loss it would bring isnt something I'm looking forward to  rather keep that for when the AE86 comes
demuire
Okay cools. So is the muffler still on the car? or... Just cause well, welding upside down is even harder than welding the right way around... I don't know if I can bring the welder to Robs place tho, just cus the gas bottle doesn't quite fit in Pinky...
