Heres a few reasons why you shouldnt buy one of those cheap mass production type stainless steel manifolds.

 

This is the most recent one, it lasted for about 3 months its a 3mm thick one

 

 

 

 

 

This is the one before that, it lasted about a year, it was only a really thin one

 

 

 

It has cracked around two of the pipes, and is too thin to weld.

 

The moral of the story, don't get one :D

Stainless is an absolutely dreadful material to make manifolds out of. Its not heat rated high enough for a start. Basically the only reason stainless manifolds are made and sold is their looks.

 

Standard cast manifolds survive the heat and rapid heat changes very well and they perform good provided they don't crack (though I suspect this is caused more by poor exhaust hanging). Aftermarket wise the best manifold you will get is made out of steam pipe. They can be had for about $950.

I'm just about to get a mandrel steam pipe manifold made for the 5k. I was quoted $400 if I supply flanges.

 

Would have bought the busted flange off ya, but I just bought one!! :y: I'm assuming its a T2 flange?

 

Out of interest, what is that turbo? GT25/GT28?\

i think my steampipe manifold will be around $850 - $900.

While it may not be the best material for heat, can i suggest that you brace it to the engine somehow otherwise this will keep happening,all the exhaust & turbo weight is hanging from those planges,and i bet the exhaust is not braced to the gearbox either!!!!!!!!!!!

My quote is also under $500 for the new mild steel manifold, but this guy is damn cheap and very reputable. The gt28rs is also getting the flick in favour of a gt30 with turbosmart external wastegate, will have to keep the boost down though as i havnt finished building the other motor. :P

I assume it isn't, but you shouldn't have to if you use the correct material. You don't need bracing on steam pipe manifolds....

 

If you want a shiny manifold get one made out of inconel, just be prepared to pay through the arse for it.

Both braces, would mean plural, so i have two braces, one to the gearbox bellhousing, the other comes factory with the manifolds. In the aforementioned photographs, both of these braces are not shown as it is easier to remove the manifold without them attached.
