tojo2 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 (edited) remove plugs and turn by hand. any resistance? compare with your other engine. What fly wheel are you using? Edited January 25, 2008 by tojo2 Quote
dfunkt Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 i've had something similar happen. ke20, 5k, elec dizzy, running the original alt from the ke20. started it about 5 times during the day, was x-mas shopping. on the way home, pulled over for some car parts, went to start it, slow turn over, like a flat battery, then smoke from the wires going to the alternator...the plastic around them was smoking. let it sit for a bit, tried again and it did the same thing. i started calling around for a ride home, then it starts to rain about 30mins after i tried to start it the last time. cursing my head off, i give it one try for shits and giggles, and it starts perfectly... so in short, i have NFI, but possibly check your alternator... disconnect it and start the car. camerondownunder88 Posted January 25, 2008 Author Report Posted January 25, 2008 Hi, Tojo I am using the stock KE15 flywheel and a NEW KE15 clutch adn clutch plate. A early gear box has different splines so I put this old style fly wheel on. When Installing it was all torqued properly and new spigot bearing installed and all aligned and it slid onto the gear box easy. So yes issues could happen here but clutch dis engages good is strong and doesn't seem to be causing issues. Also Alternator funny you say that I did turn motor by hand with plus in hard as hell and slow but to do this I disconnected the fan belt. So might give this a shot disconnecting the alt. Is original 1969 alt and could be dead but I mean looks new..LOL I will build all new earth wires for it tomorrow and by pass the ignition circuit straight to the starter and see what happens. Fingers crossed it is just an earth. Cheers Cameron Quote
neil Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 it most likely is the wiring dropping the voltage. check the fuseable link, does it look a little burnt?. also evry corolla ive seen has a relay to the starter to make sure its getting the 12 volts. Quote
trd Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 only a thought. but if your using a ke15 flywheel, are using a ke15 starter. if the number of teeth on the starter are different from ke15 to ke20-30-70 that can cause the starter to bind up. i haven't seen it before in corolla starters but i have seen it in other cars. worth a try. tojo2 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 Not saying it is, but could be wrong thickness of sandwich plate between eng. and gearbox. Quote

tojo2 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I saw one the other day that was at least 4-5 thick, I don't think it would affect cranking though. Just less of the input shaft in the spigot bearing and the starter wouldn't mesh in as far onto the fly wheel. How are you going with this Cameron? I belive it would affect cranking if plate is to thin :pressureplate comes in contact with bellhousing, wrong pos. of starter and inputshaft. Quote

tojo2 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Even if its only 2mm difference, it changes the position of the gear box. Have seen people have had issues with contact between bellhousing and pressureplate due to this. Thickness of sandwich plate does not influence how far starter gearwheel meshes into flywheel gear ring as starter and flywheel remain in same pos. to one another. I know I suck at explaining stuff so anyone else than myself understand what I mean :hmm: , but I try to be clear Quote
