thomasseeber Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Hi I've just put a K50 behind a 3K in a KE20. The 'box is high km's and makes a very loud whining noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. 4th is quiet. It only does this when under load. The guy I bought if from says it's 'bearing noise'. With noisy boxes I normaly just keep driving them 'till they explode, and put another one in. However, I've had some succes repairing toyota boxes in the past, so I might try fixing this one, but a few questions first: 1) Do you thinkn it's just bearing noise? ie replace the bearings and it's fixed? 2) How far can I push it before she explodes? 3) If a bearing goes can I still drive home and then repair the box? or is it all over? 4) Does anyone know details of the bearings in a K50 so I can buy them before I even pull the box out? Cheers, Thomas Quote
Clapped out Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 In my opinion, if you keep driving it the way it is, obviously the worse it gets.................the more damage................and the more it will cost. Smart thing would be to drop the box, pull the inspection plate off and have a squiz inside and see what your up for. Check all aspects of the box and go from there, just my 2c, cheers phatke30! irokin Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Lay shaft bearings. 4th doesn't make a noise because the lay shaft isn't under load. I drove a noisy K50 box (same issue) for a year or so. Got sick of the noise before the gearbox gave up! Quote
thomasseeber Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 that sounds right. I'll see if I can get some bearings and have a go at it. might do some gaskets and seals while i'm there... Quote
adam-__- Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Don't forget to keep us updated! I've got the exact same issue with my box, but I've got no idea what to do about it. I think I'm just going to keep driving it till it dies. Quote
thomasseeber Posted May 5, 2008 Author Report Posted May 5, 2008 No drama's Adam. I have to swap out the G50 in the Hilux and tune the carbs on the Celica before I get to the rolla box, but i'll post for sure. Tom Quote
thomasseeber Posted June 8, 2009 Author Report Posted June 8, 2009 No drama's Adam. I have to swap out the G50 in the Hilux and tune the carbs on the Celica before I get to the rolla box, but i'll post for sure. Tom ok...i came across another 'box and put that in. and have now sold the car ;) Quote
love ke70 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 the box wont die behind a K motor, they just get noisier, kinda like the diffs, shoulda seen the wheel bearings when i pulled them for a road worthy, i didnt even notice the noise after driving it for a couple of years. ask ben about dodgy bearings ;) Quote
seabiscuit Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 I had a K40 box with the same issue, however it didn't have 5th to whine! It was quite a noisy, grinding box before one night I went out "thrashing" for a few hours with loud music. When I turned off the music and drove it home it whined really badly. About a month after this night I was just mucking about and gave it a little bit more than I normally would while trying to go fast and BANG, clunk clunk clunk. It was all over. So basically I drove it till it died and then replaced with a 5 speed! Quote
adam-__- Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 I couldn't handle the whine so I went 4AGE. haha I believe the new owner of my box is still using it and going strong though! Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Lay shaft bearings. 4th doesn't make a noise because the lay shaft isn't under load. I drove a noisy K50 box (same issue) for a year or so. Got sick of the noise before the gearbox gave up! It's not so much the layshaft bearings, its the fact that the layshaft eats into the shaft that it runs on. the box wont die behind a K motor, they just get noisier, kinda like the diffs, shoulda seen the wheel bearings when i pulled them for a road worthy, i didnt even notice the noise after driving it for a couple of years. ask ben about dodgy bearings :? YES they do die!!! ;) And beofre you say it I've done this exact thing (worn layshaft shaft) long before the motor was turbo'd. Boost just makes it happen faster. ;) Quote
Boost+k Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 i killed about 6 with turbo k series before i went to t40, all died in slighlty different ways aswell Quote
love ke70 Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 obviously some die, but how many noisy boxes are out there, and how many have actually died? Quote
