I have a standard KE20 at the moment, and am thinking of building up a 4K for it. I have read about 3K heads raising compression, but most people are talking about big port heads, is it worth using my standard head and tidying up the ports?

If you want some nice power out of a 4K, Use a 4k bottom block, 1ggte pistons, 4k port and polished (Ported out nice and large :doublebird:), Shave the head a little to bump up the compression. Get some good quality spark plugs, 9mm leads, 5K electronic dizzy, Side draft manifold with SU's or Webber(s) (What ever you can afford and pay for in fuel), 4:1 extractors, (4:2:1 if u can get them :greenbounce:), nice lumpy cam, valve springs to suit, double timing chain would be good :(, 2" exhaust etc etc

There is no replacement for displacement

i love that saying :greenbounce:

well actually there is, its called forced induction. On the other hand, forced induction can't really replace a bigger engine in the first place... like... a turbo on a 4K compared to a turbo on a 5K... the 5K still has a bigger belly to eat the juice. More potential is what I mean. That's not to say riceboxes don't shit all over V8's.

By the way smitty1, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw your post, why not go a 5K? I was under the impression the only people who do up 4K's are people who start with 4K's... because they can't be bothered with a whole engine swap... like me

not sure if its the Ke20 or Ke1* , but to what ive been led to believe is that you need a blue plate if you use a 5k in one of them; could be wrong tho..

lol - 100 kmh & watching the needle hit 8,000 was oh so funny. Remember that nick? :doublebird:

Unless simons motor can do 8,000 and hasnt tried... :greenbounce:

hehehehhehe

I wasn't sure if the boost in compression might make up for a slight lack of flow, not knowing how bad a standard 3K head was.

The reason for doing up a 4K is that you need to engineer a 5K in NSW. I beleive that a 4K complies under the 15% increase in capacity as an owner certified modification. If I was going to spend the money on an engineers certificate, I would probably go all the way and fit a 4AGE or GZE. Plus fom what i have read, a 4K can be lent on to give respectable performance for not a huge outlay.

Thanks for the replies, if a 5K dropped into my lap for the right price I might reconsider.

well i've done it and i wish i had gotten a 5k. i mean seriously, any engineer who makes you do more than a ke70 brake upgrade to use a 5k is a dickhead, just shop around until you find the right guy

a 5k is about $500 and assume $150 for engineering. i think that is money well spent, and as they say, hindsight is better than foresight

balancing a bottom end would cost a few hundred. lighten the flywheel too ($100). and add a hd clutch ($250). i'd personally spend the money getting bigger valves put in the head and a professional port job, they're definately a big restriction point in a 5k ($600)

haha no, you swap a 4k into a car with a 3k. the people you see not using 5Ks are the ones too lazy to engineer it, like me :D

hang on, i was under the impression all K series corollas could fit a 5K or 4K or 3K? doesnt really matter but.. yeah like my ke20's engine bay is roomy as...
