In November, we are coming over to Melbourne for a work function, we're staying at Dock 5 and we have to go to Hawthorn. Is there a train, tram or would a taxi be better? dfunkt Posted October 9, 2008 Report Share Posted October 9, 2008 tram or train in the morning would be the best bet. either catch a tram, or just walk up from Dock 5 to Southern Cross (Spencer St Station), and catch a Lilydale Train to Hawthorn. otherwise, the #70 tram (and a few others, which i'll hunt down the numbers for) will take you out to hawthorn. from where you are, if you don't mind walking, it should take you around 40 mins to walk from Dock 5 to Hawthorn. (now that i've actually counted the time, it seems alot longer than first thought, but might be enjoyable at the end of the day) both Bridge Rd or Swan Rd (they run parrallel to each other on the way to Hawthorn) have heaps of boutique stores and cafes, which if i've read other posts correctly, you'll have a ball in :cool: also Toorak Rd and Chapel St aren't far away either! i assume you won't be bringing the 'tivo, so maybe Chapel won't be much use to you, except to laugh at all the vl's. what date's are you in melb for? spring racing carnival is on for plenty of betting and drinking. dF Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maybe head up to the Eureka Tower observation deck or even the Rialto observation deck (if its still open...havent heard much about it lately), If you want to do the touristy thing. Thank you!!! *must save money for shopping!!!* The aquarium is a goer....what about late night restaurants or places to eat??? oh, and a pub!!! oh, I thought it would be a buzz for my staff to have their own driver (car service) to pick them up from the airport in the ... (this is secret) oh, umm chrysler C300? you know the gansta car that everyones now got?? So can any one recommend a hire car company? I found this one (but $400 was more than our flights over there and for the short ride (it is short isn't it!) from the airport I couldn't justify it.... dfunkt Posted October 9, 2008 Report Share Posted October 9, 2008 the trip from the airport is around 25 mins... the airport shuttle bus is $16 each to the city, and that will drop you off at southern cross station. if there's more than 10 of you, i know i'd splash the extra $$ for the 300C limo :P how 'late night' restaurants are we talking?? Hardware Lane with its 30 something restaurants and bars would be the ideal place to go (it runs from Bourke St to Lonsdale St between Queen St and Elizabeth St), otherwise Bank Place (a lane that runs from Collins St to Little Collins St and between William St and Queen St) has 5ish nice places for a good feed. pubs are plentiful...again, Hardware Lane would be the place to go, as their relatively idiot free...i'm sure you've heard the stories of all the night-fights recently. dF Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Johno Posted October 10, 2008 Report Share Posted October 10, 2008 If you want to waste a few hours, Crown Casino is the place to be, Theres heaps of shops, bars, night clubs, cinema's, restaurants, galactic circus (Like timezone but bigger) and of course pokies and what ever else you can throw a coin at. At night there is a fire display out the front on the Yarra river that goes off every hour i think, tourists love it. Chapel St is good too for a look and some good eating there too. Then there is markets at St Kilda on the beachfront on Sunday mornings, there are markets near Flinders St Station (across the river) on Sunday too I think. Tuesday: 6am - 2pm Thursday: 6am - 2pm Friday: 6am - 5pm (General merchandise closes at 4pm) Saturday: 6am - 3pm Sunday: 9am - 4pm Closed every Monday and Wednesday, Good Friday, Anzac Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day Great place to look around and waste some time, pretty big place.
