never Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Hey guys, Picked my car up from being tinted and was all happy with the job. Not that I could see much as it was bucketing down with rain all day. Woke up today to give the car a bit of a wash. The tint is fine but the bonnet and roof are covered in little paint blemishes. Looks like someone has put bleach on it. I tried using a really mild cutting compound on it but no luck the marks are not coming out. Has anyone got any idea if they use any chemicals at tint places that could damage your paint? Quote
7shades Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Usually only a mild detergent or sugar soap... Did you have old tint that needed to be removed? Some places use ammonia to break down the old adhesive... Quote
Johno Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) Could be methelated spirits.. Not good for acrylic paint :( I remember when i was cleaning my windows with metho and news paper and a couple of drops went on the paint, sort of took away a bit of the colour in the paint. Not sure what you could do, sorry mate. Edit: It seems funny that its on the roof and bonnet, I would have thought if it was anywhere it would be down the sides of the doors :) Edited November 23, 2008 by Johno Quote
never Posted November 24, 2008 Author Report Posted November 24, 2008 Rang the place today and they don't use any chemicals nor do they really do anything on the outside of the car. So I have no idea what happened between saturday and sunday morning but the paint is not looking the best. Thanks for the quick replies on here. I am off tomorrow night to get a panel beater mate to look at it. Fingers crossed the news is bearable... there has been a few tears this weekend over it:( Quote
orangeLJ Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 throw up a picture of the "damaged" paint. Would make it easier to identify or atleast give some ideas on why. Quote
drc_ke20 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 umm.....thats odd that they say they didnt do anything on the outside???? :P normally they would pre-cut on the outside windows and stick it on the inside, maybe the solvent they used to clean the windows are not mixed properly? Quote
Trev Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 I was at the tint shop when they did my windows watching them and they do not use any chemicals, It is probably from something in the rain like acid rain. Quote
Matt-e30 Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 well if it rained and the car was left outside in you weather your likely to get rain spotting thru your piant which you will find on all the top panels i.e. boot, roof and bonnet practically anywhere the water can sit without run-off.. tint places do use chemical but mainly a mild soap to help the film slide when they pre-cut on the outside of the car.. i have never known a tint shop not to do this as it would be incredibly difficult to do so just on the inside of the car... some tint shops use a chemical called panel-wipe (prepwash) to remove glue deposits on windows from previous tint, stickers etc that may have been on the inside of the window and so on.. best bet to get rid of the spotting you curently have (mid you i can't see what these dots look like) would be to have the car buffed with a medium cut compound and would probably only remove with a rotary buff as you would need to get a certain amount of heat into the paint.. then give it a good glaze and wax afterwards to prevent it happening again.. if you were in Sydney i could take a look at it for you and buff it if need be but I'm guessing your not from sydney Cheers Matt Quote
never Posted November 30, 2008 Author Report Posted November 30, 2008 Whatever it was has now come off and the car has been waxed and polished so hopefully it wont happen again. Thanks for everyones advice. Quote
