is there any brake upgrade that is commonly done to ae86 struts?

i ask because i have ae86 struts in my garage, and i want to upgrade the front brakes on my ke25. i don't want to make steering much worse, so i'd like to use ae86 power steer arms, which other struts do bolt to, but i have these struts now :D

i've already looked around, and there's the usual toymods article on changing to cressida struts. and whilst the TTT 300mm brake kit would be nice, i don't want to spend us$1200.

with the s13 brake upgrade, from what i've read you install the whole nissan strut including lower control arms and steering arms, yeah? probably would ruin the front track on a little ke25 - can anyone with an ae86 measure the length of the LCAs, mounting bolt to ball joint? are ke70 LCAs the same? does this affect wheel offset?

i couldn't find anything on the rx-7 brake upgrade i've heard about. any help?

Sorry I can't be of any help, instead I've just got a question to add to yours. Does anyone know where I can find details of the S13 strut/brake upgrade?

By the way, this is my 100th post. Yay! :D

3 most common upgrades ive found

1. jdm caliper upgrade...this allows you to use a larger, vented rotor

2. s13...i was under the impression you would need to change the struts for this but upon speaking with Anthony Kellam he doesnt believe its necessary

3. rx7

the rx7 upgrade basically bolts on with the exception of making mounting brackets for the calipers

ive come across various threads on toymods, club 4ag etc that elude to 300zx, ma61 supra, non turbo r32 & 728i bmw upgrades....the only person i know thats done one of these is mr shin from toymods...i believe he's done the r32 upgrade

most people seem to think the TTT kit is overkill and too heavy...some argue the same about the rx7 upgrade

most of you would know simon simon-ae86 from toyotacarclub.net & toymods...he's done the s13 strut & brake upgrade if you wanted to pm him for some info

for the ke25 i would say the jdm caliper upgrade, braided brake lines etc would be the cheapest & most effective upgrade as the car is light & wouldnt need much to pull it up...plus you'd save a few kilos

I'm actually considering pulling out of the rx7 upgrade and going ahead with the jdm upgrade. With the right pads, fluid & lines i think it would be more than adequate. Ive got 233mm x 18mm rotors to suit & i believe its enough

i'll measure the lca's tomorrow after i get home from work

i usually don't believe things are "bolt on" anymore unless i see pictures :D thanks for the tips tho, i'll look up mr shin and i've written to simon. however he has rose jointed control arms and a drilled crossmember, i was hoping to have my car street legal :blinks:

i probably should have specified that whilst i just have a 4k now, i'm going to say to my engineer "i want this to be good for up to 200rwhp" and i doubt even vented brakes in 13" wheels will cut it. i just want to look into all my options before i go see someone (and pay them for their time)

thanks heaps for your help tho, you've given me lots to look into

hey wow i got my toymods account back :blinks:

s13 struts in 86

verdict: illegal

nissan skyline brakes 1

skyline brakes 2

skyline brakes 3 (good details post by shin)

verdict: cbf getting custom hubs made. and i couldn't handle having nissan parts on my corolla :D

ae86 aus to jdm

good enough for 200rwhp? not likely, but an option. definately good enough for a 15 second 1300cc motor. cheap way out of it for now? bolts up onto 86 p/s arms

ae86 hilux upgrade

verdict: xt130 corona struts with better brakes. i think this is best. corona brakes frist, option of hilux/pug upgrade if one needs better stopping power. bolts onto 86 p/s arms

i like how there's about 3 useful posters in all those threads, everyone else is like "thanks for giving us a step by step, could u show me some pics too? i can't read" so typical toymods  i don't believe i acutally found the site useful, and the search function does work OMG!!!111

there's also a picture of redrilled FC rotors on 4 bolt hubs. i don't believe how many people out there are running around with massively f@$king illegal cars. welded caliper mounts, cut-n-shut control arms. and i thought i was dodgy bolting on ke70 brakes without having it engineered, sheesh!

VR4 rotors and VT V8 4spots give you about 5-10mm clearance on a 14" rim.

I let you know when they're fitted.

Mel had skyline rotors on her old Datto, and they fit under 14's.

speaking of, paul pyvarra (sp?) who used to own red rocket told me that he used to use magna brakes on his red rocket ke25. they apparently just slip over the hubs (corolla discs removed) and you use longer wheel studs, custom caliper bracket, MAYBE machine discs down to fit in 14s

that would probably be best, ke25 still has the shortest steering ratio. then you could sell me the coilovers out of redwrf :D i'll end up buying the whole car via aus post

Just so you know, Pug brakes on XT130 struts are also technically illegal, beacuse technically you aren't allowed to change struts. Rather silly rule. Nobody notices that my struts are a little larger than standard ones...

yes, i'm hoping i'll be able to get around this too :D

i actually found a document i got emailed ages ago about an illegal ke10 front brake upgrade which uses EG CRX rotors. i've emailed DBA to get some more info on the rotors, because i could use them and just get a vented-disc caliper and get a one-piece mount made cheap. should be bolt up with no welding, nice and legal

if you have money enough you could buy bremsport calipers and big vented and cross drilled discs.. that is what I have on my ae86, I think the bremsport calipers are from a celica of some kind, and the mounts for the calipers are modified... really expenssive shit. but hey, it works great! ( only a couple of mm clearing for the wheels when I'm using 15" .. )
