eiriksmil Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I hear AE86 coilovers fit late KE70s.. Now, what coilovers to buy? :) I've found K-Sports (I've seen some bust and start leaking), Megan Racings, T3s and GReddy Type Ss. I hear TRDs are an option, but I don't find them.. If anyone can lead me in the right direction I'd be happy :D They need to be able to drop the car about 100mm, maybe more.. I can just cut the coilover springs or have the ones I'm ordering the coilovers from use shorter springs, I guess that's not the biggest problem. Quote
bLinded_ Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I am unsure about which brands to go for, but if you wanted to, you can always make your own from bare 86 struts. Coilover kits are had pretty cheap and only take like 30minutes to make (if you have the gear.) With some decent shocks, they will do the same job as any premade, brand name coilovers. Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 For premade ones id go the A J P S stuff.. Coilovers on AE86 struts with good short shocks, any spring rate, Camber tops, and RCA's... can't go wrong Quote
eiriksmil Posted February 2, 2009 Author Report Posted February 2, 2009 http://trdparts.jp/english/list_ae86.html Coil springs and shock absorbers for racing sounds good. Not that they are coilovers, but they should go low enough.. If not I could cut the springs I suppose.. Do AE86s and KE70s differ in the rear suspension? Quote
SLW42 Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I think 86's have independent arse Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I think 86's have independent arse Nope, solid coil-sprung rear. Quote
Sturgey Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 go a coilover sleve kit matey slydar on ae86drivingclub.com.au sells a sleve kit and he also has a tutorial on how to make the coilover etc. will cost u about 420 max for the sleve kit + springs where as new coilovers ur looking at 800+ second hand ur looking at 500+ Quote
Clown Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I was goin to run the greddy units before i gave up on my project. Quote
SLW42 Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 I think TIEN do 86 coilovers aswell I think there called TIEN Super Street coil overs not to sure but yeah Quote
eiriksmil Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 Bump, as this is again relevant.. We have TRDs, K-Sports, Megans, T3s and Greddys, at least. Who's got any experience with any? How low do they go (the guy selling all bar TRDs couldn't answer me)? Or do you guys only cut springs? I tried asking at a AE86 board, but they only drift their cars. :P I wanna go 150mm/6" down, that scared them a bit.. Quote
simsey Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) Most of those pro adjustable coilovers have huge amounts of height adjustment, like around the 300mm mark.. much more than what you're wanting, but like these guys have already said, you can make your own using bare ae86 struts like I have done on my car for alot cheaper and it will do the same job. Not sure about brands to go with but most of them should be fairly good judging by what some of them are worth.. This is the kit you buy to weld onto ae86 struts. These ones have 100mm of height adjustment, and the heights you can get from them all depends on where you mount them on the struts. This is what it looks like installed. Hope that helps - Tim Edited April 29, 2009 by simsey Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 You don't buy coilovers, you make them. Quote
Boost+k Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 You don't buy coilovers, you make them. QFT to drop the car 150mm you'll have to shorten the casings before welding on sleeves, but if you drop it 150mm i think you'll have clearance issues, i shortened my strut casings by 60mm and put short inserts in but with standard 30mm size bumpstop theres no clearance to turn at that height, i run about 55mm bumpstop now. alot of people buy/make coilovers and forget to install them without springs to set bumpstop height so your wheels don't contact anything under full compression Quote
eiriksmil Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 You would shorten the strut casing to get them higher up on the struts and therefore lower more, is that it? I've only been around FWD cars before, and on most of them you just drop your old struts out and bolt some new ones in, no need to work around casings, spindles etc. Turning depends on wheel specs as well, I'm going for 13x8 175/50s so I guess I won't have the same issues regarding clearance. Where do you get shorter inserts then? I'm gonna start looking around for strut casings now. Want to have two separate set-ups, one stock and one coilover, as then I can just bolt the stock ones in for M.O.T (every 2 years). simsey, that looks very good :P Quote
Boost+k Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 yea thats a pretty small tyre, i run 195-45-15s on the track and i thought they were small lol yea shorten the casing, so if you were looking a simsey's setup the red bit above the threaded bit wouldnt be there, so creating more travel, theres a few options for the inserts, i've only ever played with late ke70 casing and there the same as ae86, but early might? be smaller requiring a skinnyier insert i run trd ae92 inserts, and like i said i shortened casing 60mm(with no dust seal), i run kyb ae92 inserts in another of my cars, there a good all round size and stroke, if you want even shorter you'll need sw20? rears, but the valving might not be the best suited other thing to note when going this low you NEED RCA's, theres a aussy company that does 40mm ones i'd reconmend them over the 35mm american ones because you want to go so low Quote
