Hi i currently own a 75 ke35 with a 4k , 4 speed manual and looking to upgrade to a 5k and a 5 speed.

at the very least leaving the 4k but putting in a 5 speed.

Not got huge amounts of knowledge but have read a few different things from forum topics about the conversion. most generally seem to say its a bolt in job but that is rarely the case (ie don't want to start this project until i know of everything involved). would like to get the hidden cost factor a bit more sorted.

listed below is what i have found from the forums. would like to know any more problems i might find.

*need to shorten and rebalance tailshaft?

*cut new whole for the shift stick of the 5speed ?.

*larger starter (not got enough torque) and possibly different alternator ?

*different distributer?

*various wiring changes?

* need a different set of coils?

as you can see I'm a bit skecthy on the details.

Hopefully this isn't just another annoying question from a newcomer. any help will be greatly appreciated.

*need to shorten and rebalance tailshaft? nope (assuming it's a K50 box)

*cut new whole for the shift stick of the 5speed ? only if the 5spd is from a ke70 (again, assuming it's a K50 gearbox)

*larger starter (not got enough torque) and possibly different alternator ? just keep your current alternator and starter motor and swap them onto the 5k

*different distributer? doesn't really matter, use either.

*various wiring changes? wiring differences between elec dizzy and standard, alternators can be internally or externally regulated.

* need a different set of coils? nope, but can upgrade to a larger one if wanted to.

crispy, good work on reading up before posting your questions!

dfunkt has basically answered all your questions. Just keep in mind there are 2 different models of 5 speed, the only real difference is the gearshifter is in different places.

The 2 types are from KE55 (hard to get) and KE70 (common as muck).

KE 70 type has the shifter all the way at the back of the box, the KE55 one is forward further and I would guess probably fits almost bang in in the location of your 4 speed shifter.

the KE55 5 speed will fit straight in your KE35 no cutting invloved

The Tailshaft will fit fine, ive had a KE55/70 4 speeds and 5 speeds in various rolla's and never had to change length of shaft.

Use 4k starter and altenator. As said, the alternator wiring might be different, but use what you have on your current motor as you know it works :jamie:

Can use either points dizzy, or electric dizzy off the 5K... not sure what wires do what, think one goes to - on coil and one on + ?? don't hold me too it though.

Personally, the major difference I have found is that the KE70 5-speeds tend to be more durable - and I like to think that I baby my gearbox.

As stated, KE55 5 speed will line up with your current shifter hole.

To add to philbey's comments, when I installed the KE70 5-speed, the shifter was further back. I extended the hole in the tunnel to suit the KE70 shifter, and then I pop-riveted some plating to cover up the old hole.

Yes, this will affect your interior carpeting, so either replace the tunnel carpet entirely or stitch in a patch over the old hole. Or if you don't care, just leave it with the plating exposed.

Another small issue you may run into is the reverse light plugs may not match, so you may have to do some mix-and-matching to marry up the adapter plugs.

Other than that it is a pretty easy bolt-in.

Keep an eye out on here, as there have been a few reasonably priced 5k/5-speed packages for sale lately. And if the package is still in the car, you can check the condition of both the engine and gearbox in one hit.

Your not far from the QLD boarder are you?? If not I'm sure we could organise a deal with one of my spare 5K's and 5 speeds if interested.

Thanks heaps the info provided has really been helpful.

it has given me some more direction for my project. I'm on a tight budget but have plenty of time and motivation so that really helps. good to know that this conversion may actually happen.

With a bit of luck there may be a 5k sitting in place of the 4k.

Cheers, for the much appreciated help.
