LukeAE71 Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 hey top shit !! feels good when everything just works lol thats a pretty good power figure. As far as engineering goes, i dare say you will have to get the surge tank and fuel pump engineered, which is pretty much them saying "yeah its right" And i have a feeling that you wont pass with trumpets, you will probably have to pass it with a standar air box or one similar to the original 20v. Also a big call but I'm pretty sure that aftermaket ecu's are actually illegal all together. I am aware that there are a few 'grey' areas with this build. As it was supposed to be a budget build I am not going to go to the expense of getting it engineered. I am going to maintain a normal sort of ride height and I don't do skids and stuff so I don't plan on getting picked on by the 5-0. As it is the car looks quite subtle so I will rely on that to get me by. Also if a Police Officer has a casual look in the engine bay it doesn't look all that flashy, no shiny stuff, no big turbos etc. The local officer has already looked at it when he came past my house one day and commented on my nice weber carbys :sob: Shows how much they know hey :no2: This is also the last time I will address the legality of this build. 8/ You can lock them, and I'm fairly sure you lock a LT10s too. Just buy a fibreglass airbox off a sponser on ae86dc. And surge tank and fuel pump should be under the car or in engine bay. Might get away with it if you build a cover for it. MIGHT. Anyway heaps stoked for you man I'm coming down to Adelaide around christmas time so I definately want to see this beast, 91kw is a great number!! gotta be stoked with that ;) Travis. Why would you buy an airbox..... you would spoil the no. 1 reason for having the trumpets!! Induction Noise  Get on youtube and search for 20 valve with open trumpets, the sound is absolutely horny  The bark I get from the T3 ones is insane  not bad, but only 5 or 6kw more, than the last ST i saw dynoed :y: I'm not sure where I said it was better than others :P I'm not so concerned with the power level. It was more the fact that it runs and well, makes good power and also it was a second hand engine that I bought untested for like $700 so you just never know what you are getting. I am glad it pulled off and turned out to be a good engine. :y: I might make some changes later on, cam gears etc to see if I can break the 100 rwkw mark
trav_555 Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 O don't worry I know what they sound like, I have 20v ITB's sitting in my garage, ive done the research :y: Travis.
LukeAE71 Posted June 18, 2009 Author Report Posted June 18, 2009 O don't worry I know what they sound like, I have 20v ITB's sitting in my garage, ive done the research  Travis. From what you post (here and elsewhere) it sounds like you have done a lot of research. Well done, most people just jump in without knowing much and can be disappointed with the end result. I researched the 20 valve thoroughly before I went through with it. I haven't had my first drive yet but I doubt I am going to be disappointed :y:
benzo Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 Well done Luke, 91rwkw is a pretty good figure Can't wait to hear this thing Cheers, Ben.

Funny thing is ive never driven a 4age, and have never seen one apart from the ones sitting in my garage  Never seen a 20v in person neither :y: Travis.

LittleRedSpirit Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 I think youd be fine with adm brakes for now. Ventilated discs only really aide cooling and recovery of the brakes between stops. If you just want it safe and comfy then adm brakes give equal ability to stop to jdm brakes, they just wont be as awesome to flog. You can run a brake booster from a ke30 1976, or some ke55s, which bolts all up the same way and is a smaller diameter, slightly longer unit. This way you can fit unmolested trumpets and filters, to a better extent than usual.

I could not run a standard ecu and I was not interested in the expense of a custom airbox set-up. I get what you are saying though and if you were running this in a FWD format where stock ecu can be utilised it is not worth the expense of aftermarket etc. :) Interestingly enough the tuner has his own AE82 with stock 20V running stock air intake and stock ecu and he showed me the power graph as opposed to mine. There is literally 5 kw difference between the stock set-up and mine but as we discussed I had no choice in the matter. Either way I am happy with the result and it wasn't all about power, it was to upgrade for a nice daily. It shits all over the 3 speed auto 4AC :y: I think youd be fine with adm brakes for now. I am going to hunt around for a KE30 brake booster this weekend and yes I have noticed they are much smaller. I wonder though what the trade off would be regarding pedal feel :lolcry: Anyway.... update: I took the car home last night all tuned up. It is really nice to drive. I didn't really get a chance to give it too much stick as I was too busy keeping an eye on things, making sure everything was running well and my custom cooling set up was working well. I am too careful sometimes and think I should have just sunk the boot in. I am pleased to report absolutely no issues (touch wood) and it is running sweet. :y: I gave it a little squirt in third up hill on the freeway and let's just say the kid next to me in his Magna was a little confused as the sound and movement did not match what he was seeing if you know what I mean. He gave me the thumbs up when I turned off, lame I know but I enjoyed it. Tomorrow is go time, going to take it for a good run and give it some well deserved treatment :y:
LukeAE71 Posted June 21, 2009 Author Report Posted June 21, 2009 I just spent the whole weekend driving my 20V AE71. It is wicked fun to drive :bash: No issues to report so I just had fun all weekend in it, even gave the wife a drive :D
LukeAE71 Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 I took a fellow Rollaclub member out in this car last night and finally drove it with a bit of fury Um Yeah It is quick.... that is all :)
trav_555 Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Gotta be stoked man, gotta be stoked, only 2 months or so for me :) Travis.
benzo Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 I took a fellow Rollaclub member out in this car last night and finally drove it with a bit of fury Um Yeah It is quick.... that is all :) Where's my ride? lol
LukeAE71 Posted June 24, 2009 Author Report Posted June 24, 2009 Where's my ride? lol When I'm down your way I'll give you a holler.... So far I haven't been that way. :)
LukeAE71 Posted June 25, 2009 Author Report Posted June 25, 2009 The clutch master cylinder that I got second hand with my pedalbox decided to spring a leak. I noticed the leak while I was under the dash locating a fuse for the interior light. Would you believe that there is another fuse box located under the kick panel??? Why?? Luckily I had a spare master cylinder from a trip I made to U Pull It a couple weeks ago so I replaced it straight away. Whilst doing this I discovered another benefit of having a JDM T50. The slave cylinder is located in such a position that you can reach in and undo the bleed nipple from in the engine bay and no need to get under the car. All other ones I have done you have to get under the car for!! Clutch system all bled up now with the assistance of the wife doing the pedal pumping. Clutch actually feels much better to use now so the old one must have been screwed right from the moment I put it in.
trav_555 Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 Yep I found 3 fuse boxes on my car a while ago when i was having some trouble with some wiring, kick panel on drivers side floor, one near steering wheel, and the one under the bonnet, I'm not sure if there is one on the passenger side kick panel, who knows. I'm putting a seal kit through my clutch master cylinder etc because I don't want that happening, O and I have a JDM t50 :) stoked :D How does it go for stopping power? I hate the brakes in my ke70 with a 4k!! I can't imagine a 4age in it with stock brakes :) Travis.
