hey I'm new here i am new to toyota as i have been mostly working with old alfa Romeo's particularly getting a few ready for events i have owned a ta22 and reluctantly had to let it go now i have a ae95 me and my mate are trying to find out if we can do a full change with a 33 boxer motor he has a turbo one out the back of his place would it be possible and what work would i have to mod the drive train this engine has been tested to be 350 hp plus cheers if i can do this i recon i would have to have a really fast toyota/alfa mongrel.

Sounds like an interesting project!

Seeing as nobody, ever, anywhere, would have done this conversion, I highly doubt you'll find any info to help you.

 

Get the measuring tape, welding gear, and make sure the coolant level in your wallet is topped up because its going to get DAMN hot with all the money flying out of it.

In my mind, yet another case of "just because you have a spare engine from xx lying around, doesn't mean you should try to put it in yy car". If it was something common, cheap and/or reliable, then it might be a different story, but replacing one of the most reliable engines in the world (Toyota A-series) with one of the most unreliable (most Alfa engines) sounds like a massive backwards step.

 

 

Then again, if you have a stupid amount of money and time lying around, go for it. If you don't, then walk away, quickly.

look I don't want to be unpolite but if your asking the question if it can be done then theres an overwealming chance you can't do it and see it through. This sounds harsh but the way it is is that if you are learning the basics of what it takes to fit it right now then you are little prepared for the serious parts of the conversion.

 

So whats so good about this engine anyway? whats its specs?

I owned a 33 series took the webers off and sold them and put the car in the scrap bin.

which one of those is the 33 series?

 

a 20v has more power than all of them and bolts right in

 

33 refers to the car, not the engine

A guy on Twincam bought one of these (a Ti, too) to replace his AE82, had nothing but problems with it and was forced to sell

its very worked with forged pistons, cams worked head etc and has a turbo fitted the car it was in was dyno'd for 350hp plus thought it was a good idea I'm no expert but have extensively worked these engines i normally work on old two litres they can produce serious power without turbos

i thought of using that engine because of keeping the 4x4 if there was a way of putting another alfa engine then i would i like toyota engines but i want something unique and different i could put a 4age 20v then turbo it but everybody does it

 

if all else fails ill pull the 4afe out and do some mods to get it up to 120-140 hp then leave as is i want torque more than hp i will be using this car as a run around as i am buying an alfetta and putting a 75 v6 in it or a twin spark

 

if the picture uploading worked that is an alfetta sedan and the other picture is a 75 v6 engine

I'm not anti toyota or anything i love old corollas etc they are heaps fun and are a nifty little car i want something unique no one tryes anything different its either nissan,toyota,mitsubishi or somethings similar toyota and alfa have had a rich racing history and i admire that

 

i want something different so i can show all you guys and girls something new cheers

There's a difference between being different because it is better, and being different for difference's sake. This is a case of being different for difference's sake, and really really really not worth it. No matter how much power the engine puts out, you're putting yourself through unnecessary hassle, time and expenditure, when you could do something unique without having to resort to something as outlandish as a turbo'd Alfa boxer.

 

Nevertheless, just visualising it in my head is bringing up problems - the Alfa engine is longitudinal whilst the 4AFE is transverse - thus you cannot retain the stock gearbox/transfer-case/driveline. And changing it to transverse most likely won't work because the boxer is a very wide engine, and you'll have firewall/radiator/transfer-case interference.

Kudo's for wanting to be different.... I like different, thats why I built my car the way it is.

 

However, as Hiro said, this is just different to the point of difficult. :jamie:

 

If you own the alfa engine already and its a good motor, maybe look at selling it to fund a 4age/gze/gte/20v conversion.

Yes there is already one 20v ae95 here, but you can still be different to him. 4agze's got dropped into all sorts of cars, but I can't say I've ever seen one in an AE95!! Has anybody else????
