Redwarf Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Yes, you would be, and your insurance would also be invalid. Unlike Col, I have a vast collection of broken axles and diffs. It won't last very long at all behind a 12A anyway. Save you're money and buy a strong LSD when you can afford it. Do it once and do it properly. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Listen to him^ :) Kill somebody with a weldy = don't drop the soap. I've had a few weldies in rollas, over them now so none of my cars currently have weldies. Because it somewhat changes your driving style (ie turns you into a bogan :P ) you will break axles and possibly the welds/sun gears in the diff. And I've done all of this with a 4k, let alone a 12a. Stock diff just won't hold up to it so start to save you pennies now for an upgrade, and get something that will take an LSD when you can afford it. Quote
chappo12 Posted October 19, 2009 Author Report Posted October 19, 2009 well what diff do you reckon a t series diff or any thing don't want to spend money on over kill if it can hold a bridgy that would be awesome Quote
SLO-030 Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 13BT KE20's STOCK ke20 BANJO diff held 167rwkw for five months. It was a welded center and I'm pretty sure axles woul have become consumables Quote
coln72 Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 unlike Col, I have a vast collection of broken axles and diffs. Just that I know how to drive Red :) Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 IIHO I don't think I'd bother with a T series for a rota conversion, just go straight for a hilux. I know you won't like that idea much financially, but it'll save you just in the cost of replacement axles (and T series axles aren't the easiest to find) in the long run. :) Quote
chappo12 Posted October 20, 2009 Author Report Posted October 20, 2009 any ideas on cost this help is awesome for a hilux Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Depends how much you can do yourself really. If not probably around $1k once you've bought the diff, had mounts cut off and new ones welded on, new bearings etc. Quote
Boost+k Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 a welded diff in a standard car is dangerous, but if you car is setup for it then i believe they are safe because you always know excatly what the car is going to do but yea i destroyed about 5 diff heads in my ke70 with 4k/5k turbos then i started welding them up, then you snap axels and usally destroy the head driving home on one axel so then i went to hilux lsd first, soon got scared of that because it would often open up when i didn't want it to, now run locked, but have done the whole suspension setup to suit, and have the power to get me out of any dodgy suituations people always seem to say you'll end up sideways changing lanes on the motorway etc... but you won't unless you tell the car to, i drive my car to work at least once a week and thats 70k's and its often raining Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Ah, also worth mentioning what weldies do to gearboxes.... which is put a lot of back-strain on them. I farked a couple. How many have you busted along with your 5 diffs Todd? Quote
Boost+k Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 yea good point... i lost count, got a pile of at least 6 down the side of the house :D (having 4 puk clutch don't help -although that was only on the last 2, which lasted about 2 weeks between them) never blew a t40 tho but my s13 box is going to blow soon by the sounds of it :) Quote
13BT_KE20 Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 (edited) my hilux converison came in at just under $2g which included buying the diff (already shortended), getting new mounts, new tailshaft. Best upgrade i ever did after fitting the 13BT I still run a locker with the hilux diff, i don't like the LSD that comes with them (they open wheel sometimes) and an aftermarket one is $$$ I havnt had any problems with my locker and don't see me changing to an LSD anytime soon. I love my locker If i was you i would be checking the wreckers, some hilux models came out with a diff very very close to a KE55 diff width. That way only the mounts and tailshsft need to be done which will keep the cost down Edited October 21, 2009 by 13BT_KE20 Quote
philbey Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 from reading the manual on my old hilux (95 model) if the VIN ends with a 2 or a 7 then it's an LSD model. Try find someone with one to validate that claim, I'm definite on the 7, not sure about the 2 though. Quote
shauns ke30 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 well as we all no most rolla diffs are flogged out!!!!!!!! like mine!!!!
