G'day All,

I hope this is in the right part of the forum, My name is Wayne I am new around here, I'm in the process of looking for a cheap run around to drive to work and the minister for finance, war, and social engagements has told me I can't have another V8.. So I've been looking at something smaller then a commodore The 89 to say 92 rollas have caught my eye so I am wanting to find out what I should look for as far as problems when I go to look at them..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Cheers,

Wayne

well from experience, the ae92/ae93's with a 7afe are known for gunking up the engine and blowing lots of lovely smoke out the tailpipe. I went down to sydney to get one for the bro in law and didn't notice it blowing any smoke. Got home and did an oil change and there was stop smoke in it :locked:

Now it blows a shitload of smoke (better with thicker oil) and burns the oil quite well that it's probably getting an oil change once a month now with the amount of cycling the oil goes through.

That's all I know thus far with these that I am under the impression is a common fault with that engine.

driveshafts wearing out and the same for gear synchros. Try and do a quick downchange into second or third gear and listen for any crunch sounds. That and rust of course

Um what? So if this guy buys an ae92 he should check to make sure the engine isn't 'gunked up' because 'gunking up' is a common engine fault? How exactly do you check that?

Are you sure you didn't just buy a car with with worn rings or leaky valve stem seals that was getting longer in the tooth? Because those are the 2 reasons you'd be burning oil. Rings and valve stems wearing is a fact of life and a problem with any car. I mean sure if you're buying a car then check the km's and if it blows anything out the exhaust but that's not really 92 or 7afe specific advice

If I was looking for an ae92 then I'd be looking for an sx with the 4age, but if you don't really care about power or fun then the regular 4afc/4afe/7afe will do fine. They're very economical reliable cars, engines go forever and bits are cheap. Check for CV noise at full lock either way and rust. Power steering racks are prone to leaking. Otherwise its just like any other car really.

That's more a problem with a poorly serviced engine rather than a common engine trait. All A-series engines do increase in oil-consumption as they get older (usually either rings or valve-seals wearing), but properly run in, serviced and maintained (5000km oil-changes and a thicker 20-50 or 25W50 oil help too) they will be fine. My 7AFE is the perfect example of that; properly serviced, maintained and regular oil changes and it has seen 320,000km without the head ever being removed.

If its a bit smokey, buy it anyway.

Flog the pisser out of it, and if it comes good, bonus. If it doesn't, nip down to the wreckers and grab another engine.

The last 4 out of the 7 AE9* I've bought recently I purchased (very cheaply) specifically because they were smokey... 3 of those 4 just needed a damn good flogging and a big gulp of denatured alcohol down the intake, the other one needed valve stem seals.

The AE93 RV's seem to do it more often.... Must be a 7AFE thing.

Um,

one of the worst things I've learnt in my travels. If the bores are glazed (due to a lack of oil changes) introduce some "Bon Ami" (less course form of ajax) into the air intake. It'll rough those bores up and stop oil consumption.

But I'll say this as dodgy as F@#K.

thanks for the feedback guys, as I said I don;t know anything about rollas so it will help alot when i go looking, really only need it for running around and going to work occasionally i go away camping with the boys so I want a little bit of room in the back to fit my camping gear in... I have my SS for fun so I'm not going to be flogging the rolla..

well the hatchbacks with the seat folded down can be fairly roomy, I am unsure if thats enough though.

Should be only gotta fit my tent, sleeping bag, a plastic tub and the most important thing for any camping trip the esky..

you can always do what I am doing; take the front seat out! 4 easy bolts and your set. I haven't had a front seat in weeks, I took it out initially to transport an engine in it's place, I mean who does that to an ae86!?
