rob83ke70 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 We recently purchased a ke30 with a 3k engine, not running, previous owner unsure as to why.... had tried a new distributor, and a new coil. Vehicle didn't come with a coil when we picked it up. Anyway, upon fitment of a new coil, I cranked it over, it backfired a few times through the carburettor, so I pulled the cap of the distributor to find that the leads were hooked up in the wrong order.... upon hooking them up in the 1342 order, I fired the engine up and it seems to run quite well..... lesson to be learnt: keep it simple!!! engines only need three things to run, air/fuel mix, compression, and spark at the right time.... Time to remove this engine to go in the ke11 daily driver now :jamie: Robert. Quote
LukeAE71 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 I have a similar story with a KE20 my brother in law bought. Not running so towed it back here. Check for spark, none apparent by use of screwdriver touching lead - check wiring is correct and firing order correct by referencing to my KE11. Everything seemed to be in order however still no spark. I inspected the points, they looked a little worn, gapped them properly as they were closed at all times, still no spark. I had a spare set of points, took less than a minute to replace, cranked over with screwdriver in hand (except forgot to use an insulated one) and sparked hard and went straight up my arm!!! Mental note to use rubber handled screwdriver next time. I plugged lead back in, threw some petrol down the carby and boom started first pop!! Not bad for an engine which apparently hadn't run for 6 months. These things are so simple I love them :jamie: Quote
SLO-030 Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 These things are so simple I love them :y: All engines are basically this simple. Just depends on how much crap the manufaturer puts on them to make em, NOT SIMPLE :jamie: Quote

SLO-030 Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 I know of a pranged up 55, sat for 8yrs untouched in an old ladys backyard. a new battery and some fresh fuel and it fired up straight away. Smoked a little upon starting, then ran perfect. Quote
