Super Jamie Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Tom Carter spent US$60k on his car. US$20k alone of that is in the rear end. mmm nice Quote
demuire Posted April 21, 2004 Author Report Posted April 21, 2004 Arrgh so f@$ked, every f@$king thing on the car is leaking. I have a petrol leak somewhere in the boot. My clutch slave cylinder is leaking in all directions. My brake line is leaking. Gearbox is leaking. Every freakin thing is leaking... And the worst part is that doing ANYTHING in the engine bay requires at least 2 people, with really really small hands and a million joints because there is just no f@$king space anywhere... Holding a screwdriver at the end of a pair of pliers in one hand and holding a spanner at the end of another pair of pliers on the other hand, while working blind is no fun. Spent half an hour just trying to get a hose clamp on, gave up eventually. *me looks at cut hands covered in oil, brake fluid and blood* *sucks* *whinge whinge* *i hate this car...* Quote
demuire Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 Hmm, calmer now... Car is now sitting in the front yard, I had to drop the tailshaft because the gearbox is so seized it won't even turn in neutral. Have also lost ALL the oil in the gearbox (all 1.5L of it). Oh well... Have assembled doors, front guards and bonnet temporarily, car is now baking in the sun waiting for Mr Rob to come pick it up to go get an exhaust fitted... :) Then probably going to go and buy another gearbox and some bolts... Not really looking forward to taking the gearbox off with the exhaust on, a brief look this morning suggests the engine and exhaust will have to come back out before the gearbox will come out again... demuire Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 Exhaust is now on, 2" secondaries to 2.25" mandrel bent all the way. High flow cat, dogleg straight through muffler, spiral straight through resonator to a droop tip. All I'm missing now i the manifold gasket and the gasket for the secondaries (both have been sourced but not installed) and the exhaust is finished. Have started the car, but it still sounded very rough cause of all the exhaust leaks... Also missing 2 exhaust mounts, ran out of time and couldn't put them on at the exhaust place... Picking up a new (well, "new") gearbox tonight, will endeavour to fix exhaust gaskets tonight and maybe start taking the gearbox out... Really not looking forward to that... But gosh it looks sexy :D THANK YOU MR :) FOR TOWING THE CAR THERE :blinks: :yak: :) :) :) Quote
Medicine_Man Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Damn, thats looking very fine there fook! Quote
demuire Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 Yay for "proper" tools (well, really an old dodgy ratchet and the extension from my engine hoist...), managed to get the box out in just over an hour... Again most of my time was spent taking the top two bolts off, but it was much much quicker this time. So yes, box sitting on floor now, bellhousing's been taken off and cleaned, ready to put onto the new box once I clean that one up... Maybe tomorrow. Wonder how I can seal it better so it doesn't leak like the other two... Quote
Super Jamie Posted April 24, 2004 Report Posted April 24, 2004 why is the gearbox leaking out the bellhousing? that would tend to indicate the front seal has gone wouldn't it? you're not really sposed to have oil in there with the friction surfaces of the clutch and all. that being said, another gearbox should solve your problem if the gasket is fairly thin, like an engine gasket, i usually use permatex 3 (non-hardening brown aviation goop). with this stuff you can also use the gasket again if you have to pull it apart. if you're really confident with it, you can use hylomar spray, which will last forever (and its not often a gearbox gets pulled apart) but it's tricky stuff to get to seal properly. i also like permatex black silicon, but i use this more when there is a thick gasket with lots of variances (manifolds) or something flexible that can move (sump, rocker cover), it would probably still leak on a gearbox. whatever you use, be sure to degrease and dry all surfaces first i like to run ~half lucas oil stabiliser in my gearboxes and diff. i also like to run lsd oil because it's usually not friction modified. it makes shifting into first when cold a little hard, but (i hope) doesn't break down as quicker, lasts longer, lubricates better, etc. spose it doesn't matter, both my 5 speeds are pretty shagged out :) Quote

demuire Posted April 24, 2004 Author Report Posted April 24, 2004 It is leaking out between the bellhousing and the actual gearbox, I'm guessing from the layshaft bearing. The surfaces don't appear to be very flat and don't quite mate properly (Hmm...), but have resealed and am hoping for the best. Looks like the A bellhousing and the T bellhousings for the T50 aren't the same, and are not bolt-together items. Idealy I think you'd have to get the bellhousing machined so that it will sit right on the gearbox and then get spacers made up to support the bearing better. I've used gasket paper and gasket goo (Loctite Blue Maxx). Have torqued to hand tightness with the ratchet, and will wait until it fully cures and then torque it up properly... Hope it works! If all else fails and there is a slow leak I don't think I'll mind, as long as it doesn't leak as badly as it has the past 2 times... Quote
Super Jamie Posted April 24, 2004 Report Posted April 24, 2004 separate-bellhousing gearboxes are such a silly idea, another reason why everyone should have a tuff 4K :) gearbox leaks suck, oil burns on the exhaust, comes up thru the shifter hole. i've been smelling it driving for over a month now. argh Quote
demuire Posted April 24, 2004 Author Report Posted April 24, 2004 Smells great doesn't it? My garage stinks of it, and I have it all up my driveway too!!! Even my clothes smell of it :) Quote
