Kid-Ae Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Right.. So how do I go about removing the outer black strip on the doors? Is it just held in place with some form of glue-substance or is there more to it? Mind you, it's for a 1989 AE92 CS Corolla, I HATE the look of the black along the side and would LOVE to keep it looking clean and crisp. Any help is appreciated, thanks guys! Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Glue remover in a spray bottle, you can buy it from somewhere. Pull the old ones off SLOWLY so you don't pull the paint off. spray and soak the left over sticky shit. Then rub off. Its what I used, its a tedious job. I'm sure there was a thread about this with something better to use. Quote
Kid-Ae Posted August 26, 2010 Author Report Posted August 26, 2010 Hmm.. I was thinking maybe use my heat gun? Or would that do too much to the paint? Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 (edited) Heat gun to get them off yeah for sure!!! Forgot about that. Or a hair dryer (what I used).. You'll still have a residue left over, I did it with what I had. Was poor at the time. I may not be the best person to contribute considering my dodgy build.... http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/ind...showtopic=56640 May help, I'm pretty sure that's the tread that was posted the last time someone asked. Ben-89 Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Use a heat gun but don't apply heat in the one spot for too long as you will bubble the paint, heat it to the point where the mouldings will easily come off. Eucalyptus oil should help in removing any glue, or paint thinner. Quote
daggers57 Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 (edited) There is a product called "Shellite" that will lossen the glue without damaging the paintwork, beeen used by panel beaters to remove rubber strips and pin stripes for years. works brilliantly, just spray on liberally and let soak the peel the rubber off and spray more if needed. Then use a rag soaked in shellite to rub off the remaining glue. It is available from Bunnings and also at GOOD hardware stores. :blinks: sorry, forgot to mention it is VERY flammable as it is normally used as a fuel for kerosine lamps etc. and it will also bugger up your spray bottle so use a bottle that contained solvents already like PREEN or Sugar Soap! Kid-Ae Posted August 27, 2010 Author Report Posted August 27, 2010 I believe I'll go buy some tonight then! Thanks a lot mate :blinks: Quote
Rolla Newbie Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 A comfortable seat. A few beers. Some rubber gloves. Some thinners. And patience. Some more beers. Once it is all off, wash the car and get some polish on the paint ASAP. Then sit back, look at the good job, and reward yourself with a beer. If there are any left...... Quote
Crafty Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Hey ROLLA'BOY, what colour is ur 92 and can u post some pics once its done. I've been contemplating doing this to my 92 for ages but i thought it might throw off the look because those black strips carry on to the front and rear bars. Am still curious though. Quote
ae824ate Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Also "Double D" or Eucalyptus oil works a treat to get the glue leftovers off. Trust me, I'm a doctor :jamie: Quote

SCAVMAN Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 i found wax & grease remover to be the best for situations like this. i would like to see some pics of an ae92 with them off before i do it to my car though, as it would be much harder to get them back on if i don't like the look. Quote
Kid-Ae Posted September 22, 2010 Author Report Posted September 22, 2010 Ive seen pics of AE92's without them, and they look alright. Mind you, I have a white car and base spec dark front bumpers.. So not entirely sure how it'll look, but i'm considering doing this in the next little while when I recover from glandular fever. Maybe it will improve the look, maybe not. Quote
Lachlan H Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 I need new black strips, where can i get them? I was told they had clips that would break. The panel beater stuffed up he chrome on them :( Quote
Kid-Ae Posted September 29, 2010 Author Report Posted September 29, 2010 I'd say the wreckers may have some sitting on a car, and seeing as though you're from melbourne, i know for a fact there are a couple of perfect condition black strips sitting at Pick-A-Part Kilsyth. Quote
