Another busy day with the Rolla, I'm really trying to make the most of this

next 2 weeks cause I'm holidays and usually this sorta shit would be done

on weekends.

 

Fully striped the car of its doors today which was really easy but i decided

that rather then throw them out complete it was probably smarter to strip

them of all theyre goodies first. I took absolutly everything including the rubbers,

saves me having to buy more if i need them for the next doors i buy, plus if

a window breaks or a lock f@$ks up i wont have to mess about trying to get

it from a wrecker.

Looks great mate, will be awesome in fresh white. Definately needs an outomotive oncologist though.

 

On the cut springs idea... Nobody except Dave has touched on whats really the worst part about cut springs. The spring is usually wound to a shape that flattens out at the end to give excellent contact and ability to stay in the spring seat. When you cut them, they usually just sit on one point, so then its a whole lot different the way it behaves and you have basically cut the slightly progressive rate part of the spring off. You now have reduced resistance to bottoming and also reduced contact with the diff. Now you have two things to be worried about. I will concede that my paddock car has had cut springs under it at a rather low height for some time, and we drove it hard enough to snap both shock absorbers off at the bottom bush cups and did a couple laps even bouncing through a gully at about 50klm/hr on just springs, and they never fell out, but thats not to say they wouldn't, I'm sure it would just take the right (or wrong?) bump and you'd be in trouble. More to the point is, if you do cause an injury or death, and believe me this does happen all too often, then you can't be insured and the person you hurt will get screwed by you declaring bankruptcy because you cannot pay if the insurer works it out. Plus it drives way better with the right springs in it, cutties are always bouncy. Youll survive rolling around the suburbs but don't go on the highway and expect to keep all your tyres inflated and your spine intact.

Ive sanded back the car now and have had a better look at the rust

between the boot and the left tail light and its pretty bad, i havnt

had much to do with body repairs at all and it looks like a pretty

awkward area to cut and weld a plate in, but then again mabye it isnt?

 

I just wanna cut as much as i can out and bog over it but what i wanna

know is how longs that gonna last before the rust comes back through?

On the fuel filler part i've got rust in mine but all i did, was fill that shit up and sand it flat with the body again and then paint over it aye, but the other bit along the boot i can't help you my 70 doesn't have that much rust in it at all

Just rust convert it get a good anti rust primer and use a fibreglass bog base.

Yours actually came up pretty good man, i did all the

body work today, i just used body filler though, tomorrow

ill try to sand it all back then prime the bad areas,

photos will be up when its done, not sure how PRO its

gonna be.....

So today i finally got around to getting some primer and some

photos of the really bad rust spots which ive now fixed, its only ment

to be temporary, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Its my

first time trying to fix rust this bad, and too be honest repairing

it has been pretty f$#ked. Ive got a lot more respect for people

that have the skills and patience to restore cars properly now.

Agreed, the hardest part for me was getting some alloy

mesh to stick behind the holes, and both the fuel tank

and the boot seal were hard to get behind, The boot seal

was even harder cause there was pretty much nothing left

of the metal to stick to, oh well its done and its a temp

fix but at least its good enough to paint over now.

Hard as nails. Serious. Smear a little bit of that shit on and it isnt coming off in a hurry.:no2:

I used it to patch a hole once and needed to angle grind it out.

 

But like in my pics I just duct taped over the hole and ran fibre glass bog from behind then plastic putty on the outside.

 

lots of ways to do it. Just gotta be creative. :laff:

Plenty happenin atm, recently bought a donor car for my auto

to manual conversion, Totally stripped it of its drive line

and front end, there was no interior in the car as it was set

up as a burnout car. I'm planning to get this thing road ready

before the end of the year, seems like a long time but ive still

got a lot to do.

 

So far the car is in primer and all the rust has been repaired,

the next step will be to get some paint on it and get the manual

up and running, shouldnt be too hard, just a matter of time really...

If you do little things every night you'll find that it gets done a lot quicker. Just need the motivation. :wink:

 

Do you have a check list of thing to do?

I got the donor car last week on wednesday and pulled it all apart

then got rid of it this morning, bought it off Gumtree for a good

price-it was regency defected.

 

As far as the checklist goes I'm not really planning to go too crazy

with it cause its not my main ride, its just a daily for me man,

the KE25 keeps me happy enough. Once its painted and its manual ill

be happy.
