Sorry Mods, but I didn`t know where else to put this.

I know that a lot of you are in the motor industry and am just interested to know if any of you have ever seen the following:-

I recently bought an EL Falcon as a project car, knowing that it had at least a blown head gasket. I didn`t pay much for it so, no biggy changing a gasket or two.

The woman that I bought it from did tell me that it got very hot on a recent trip back from Goondoowindi and when she switched it off at Yelarbon to check what the red lights on the dash were all about, it wouldn`t start again. Long story short, she bought a new car and I got this one for a song.

I`ve just got around to pulling the head off today after finding water in all 6 cylinders. Low and behold, not only did she cook it, but it has been so hot that two of the exhaust valve seats have actually fallen out. Yup, I`ve never seen anything like it before.

Just thought that I would share that one with you and would love to hear any other stories like it.

Cheers.

P.S. the plastic thingy on the tappett cover that holds the plug leads is also melted.

AND NOW THE WHOLE STORY.....

The car has only done a bit over 150k and is in overrated condition other than the roasted motor. Its true about the valve seats etc but I would never even consider putting the engine back together without a major overhaul. Yes, I am going to flog it off but I will replace the engine with a second hand unit before I do. I live in a small town and one just doesn`t shonk people and get away with it here.

Thanks all for the bit of fun. Cheers, Old Fella.

Wow, are you able to put pics up? My fiance drove her old AE82 for a week with no oil in the engine lol, then she finally asked me what the little red light was haha.

Going back 4 years now I had an 'ol XF falcon ute. I never left town with it, just always cruised about our country town with it til the day my partner ended up in hospital in wagga wagga 130km away.

I finished work at approximately 10am, thought to myself "fill er up and she will be right..."

Drove to the servo, filled up, went to dads and grabbed a few milk bottles full of water and a bottle of oil and off I set.

20km out of town she started to get a little warmer than usual, thought " its cool, its never done 100km.h since I have bought it, only 50k's around town.

25km out of town BANG, steam all up the side of the ute.

Filled the old girl up with water, at this point I had quite obviously blown the headgasket so I fitted the rad cap loosely and carried on.

Made it to wagga no worries, filled up with water again before I left.

about 35km out of wagga she boiled like a mofo, I filled it up but it wouldnt stop boiling so I carried on for the last 85 odd km with no water at all, the heater stopped, tappets got noisy but we made it without a drama. Even on the next morning it started right up and I took it to work, I drove it for months around town with the gasket still blown.

Once it ran out of rego, I sold it to some young fella for $100, exactly what I payed for it some 9 months beforehand.

Sorry mate, I should have taken pics but I didn`t. I`ve already pulled the head apart, taken it to a mates mechanical business and pressed the seats back in. The car is just something to make a quick buck out of, so I`m going to give the valves a quick lap, chuck a head gasket in and see if its got enough compression to start. If it does, its outa my life real quick before it really blows up.

Old falcons never die, they just go faster.

Cheers.

dude i hope your gonna skim the head, and probably the block..

and id say if its been that hot its probably actually warped the head and the cam wont sit right...

be easier to put a new motor in the bloody thing

Thanks for the tip mate, but as I said, its only gotta run and somebody out there will buy it from me and reckon its the best car they ever owned. If it doesn`t run well enough for that, I`ll part it out and make my money that way.

I was thinking that a thin skim of araldite between the block and gasket and head and gasket should sort out the warpage issue and I`ll just take a punt that the cam will sit ok.

Cheers.

thats a pretty dog act, without a skim the headgasket might only last 15k's

mate I'm greek and that sounds WAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to dodgy for me!

and greeks know dodgy!

hahaha

Might aswell skip the head gasket and cover the block in cold weld and slap the head on.

My old man used to have a VH (I think) valiant and got the engine rebuilt by a friend to run on lpg aswell, got the head done by and old I'talian who did Ferrari's and what not and he shaved the head to much and kept bowing head gaskets so they ended up using araldite and it never blew again in the 5 years after he had it till he sold it.

i thought greeks where dodgy but italians cross the line
