mhmills Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Hey guys, Just after some input. I am currently running a 4k in my KE70, I have recently had ideas and dreams for more power so thought a bigger engine would be fun. I decided 5k since it seemed most of my 4k running gear will bolt straight onto the 5k. I found a 7k engine in good nick, which I've been informed most of my 4k gear will also bolt upto. What should I do? Cheers, Jake. Quote
jimmy-d Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Think there may be issues with the sump but I'm sure others with more knowledge than me will get back to you. Quote
Crowie55 Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Sump needs to be modified to clear the crossmember, 4k clutch and flywheel need to be changed over as 7k fly and clutch will not fit in k40/k50 bellhousing. 4k engine mounts need to be used. all I can think of atm. I am doing this conversion in my 55 in a few weeks. I'll be able to tell you for sure then. cheers, Crowie Quote
Ben-89 Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Reading somewhere else on rollaclub said that normal k40/50 gearboxes arent the best to have bolted behind the 7k as the amount of torque produced is over what the box can handle. Unless you source a W series box from a Toyota Townace $$. 78 7k rolla has this conversion properly and it has paid dividends as far as drivability. 5k physically smaller than a 7k, so no sump modding is required. Secondly they are more rev happy as well torquey over the 4k. Especially if you have a set of carbs, camshaft, head work and exhaust done. If you want torque, go 7k but as far as revving ability most of their grunt is produced dowm low. As you'd know, there are numerous threads on here that will answer you're questions better than I  Good luck :y: Quote
mhmills Posted November 22, 2010 Author Report Posted November 22, 2010 Thanks for all the info guys, I guess I'll keep my search open till I find that elusive 5k engine :P Cheers, Jake. Quote
Evan G Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 sorry ben i have to correct you, matt (78.7krolla) had to cut the bottom half of the sump off and flip 180 degrees due to clearance issuses with x member. 7k have a wider sund patter on the sump so 3/4/5k sumps cannot be used 7k with a k50/k40? munch munch gears for lunch  Quote

Would the 7k chew gears if you just cruised? fella on here a few weeks ago was selling W boxes for 500ea Quote
Evan G Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 you would have to baby it none stop or fit cheese cutter so youll break traction instead of breaking gearboxes Quote
Crowie55 Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 155's and 165's stretched on 7's. cheese cutters - CHECK! :laff: Quote
mhmills Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 Super Charged 5k.....do it I'm currently in the process of very possibly twin superchargering my 4k :P Seeing as it's shitting me up the wall trying to find a 5k... Quote

Ben-89 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 spot on. Would the 7k chew gears if you just cruised? fella on here a few weeks ago was selling W boxes for 500ea A mild or hot 7k will chew up a k40 or 50 eventually. These boxes are made for light Corollas to tolerate the lower outputs of a 4 or 5k. A W-56? Townace box is the wisest choice as it can handle the torque produced along with the capability to move a commercial rated load too. So atleast if you have a hot 7k backed with a w series you know the chances of it breaking are very slim. And Mr 78 7k rolla broke one or two k40 or 50 gearboxes behind the 7k. Quote

Ben-89 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Ah interesting stuff Taz :y: , so is that the k bell housing coupled up to the w sereis gearbox? I havent really paid much attention in to this topic before so its rather interesting to see what combinations work well as a whole. Thanks. :) Quote
