Unless its a BUILT auto they generally feel sluggish and indirect so i much prefer a manual.

So many "sports shift" autos still shift up/down whenever they like not when you want them too.

A manual you are in total control of the car all the time, i don't like being a passenger while driving lol

Ditto.

I'm wanting to convert our ke11 to 3 speed auto just so its better off the mark and can actually get reasonable economy on the highway. Plus its hard finding seals for the toyoglide.

My falcon has torque down low but id still rather a manual just to be in more control.

rwd ae71 already with mild worked 4age pb 16v

It has the A40D (3sp auto), was going down this route once before with my ae71 with a 4agte, found out that they aren't a trimatic but can be built to withstand power, I was going for a stall and a shift kit.

Never tried any of those. After reading through this thread thought I'd add a bit..

K motor + Auto = poo SOOO WRONG! - The bit thats poo in your setup is 2 speed, a 2 speed manual would be just as bad.

I have always driven Autos (except before I got my license) and have always found them faster off the line than any similar manual (this rules out the toyoglide as no one has a 2 speed manual ;) ).

Auto's can be just as fun, if you hold your foot to the floor they will hold the gears as long as you could possibly want.

As far as strength goes, I've never had a Toyota gearbox break before the engine did :)

I have a 20V 4AGE and I will be putting a 4 speed auto behind it (RWD), I have no doubt it will be faster of the line than the manual equivelant (unless you get a professional driver behind the wheel).

One downside I have had, once my Soarer kicked down a gear while I was flat out around a corner... that was messy :P

my not so informed theory is that hopefully an auto will having a longer range of acceleration rather than a manual. yes i know this also comes down to gear ratios aswell. not so much drag racing but but high revv range hammering. hence why I'm not sure if a manual could stand it plus less chance of smashing a gear if in an auto as it takes out the element of human error
