Hi I am having problems with my 2A-C (Auto) pinging, closest I can get the timing is one degree of factory specs.... It will not run e10, standard unleaded, does not run well on bp ultimate 98, or Caltex Vortex 98, and stay away from freedom fuels (even their Premium has ethanol although they seem to deny it).... The petrol I have had that has been the best is the Caltex Vortex 95 R.O.N. However when it is hot it still pings under moderate load, changed the temp sensor in it, checked the thermo fan all good. would this indicate that the timing belt isn't lined up correctly therefore making the harmonic balancer timing marks out of whack ? (Also engine has 158,000km's on it) I have also tried tinkering with the mixture, could it be doing this if it was running lean ? I am honestly stumped and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it might be running lean. Is it running hotter than usual?

well according to the gauge not really... but I will have another look at the fuel mixture

Did you set the timing with the vac advance disconnected, try some shell v-power in it and yes freedom does have ethanol in it's premiums but not sure if it is all servos.

What I normally do is pull one hose off the dizzy and the other off the vacuum pipe and loop the vacuum pipes together, if you let it suck air in it will idle up.

..and it would pay to make some notes of revs versus advance if you can. You might have a dizzy problem that is advancing it too fast or too much.

 

If the vac advance goes into a ported vacuum and not manifold vacuum it won't have any effect at idle. It will suddenly produce vacuum when you accelerate and the throttle plate lifts off the port.

yeah check the timing like has been stated, you shouldnt need any fancy fuel if the timing is set to standard.

 

attack it with some carby cleaner.

 

also VERY carefully while the engine is running, mist some water into the carby.

 

nothing like a steam clean to get rid of those potential hot spots.

The 2A and 4A is recommended to run 98 and 10 degrees.

what about a carbon build up? I am no mechanic but I think it might be the possible issue

When you're setting the timing on a 2AC you need to have the bottom vacuum line from the distributor disconnected & plugged, otherwise your timing settings will be out.
