7K Performance Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I currently own a 1970 ke11 with a 7k I haven't had this engine in for long I was happy with the power increase for the first week but now I am chasing more power.

I had in mind a full rebuild, balanced, head port and polished, larger valves and cam regrind, electronic dizzy and performance coil, twin webber carbys and match ported manifold, fuel pump and rising rate regulator, and a new exhaust system.

I already have an electronic dizzy, set of extractors and a rising rate reg.

Is this going to be worth my while or do I go supercharged and fuel injection? I don't particularly want to go down this path but if what i had in mind is not going to satisfy me it probably is.

here are some pictures of the setup I'm currently running.

thats is one of the cleanest engine bays ive ever seen!

as far as engine goes i think it goes on personal preference, some people love a tough NA motor but other people love forced induction cars!

i say go for your plans with the rebuild and then once thats done if your not happy then run the supercharger on it or just go supercharged if you just want the power quicker and easier!

thats just my opinion though but theres plenty of people on here that can tell you the pros and cons.

cheers tom

hey guys I'm glad you like it, and yeah I guess how you want to build your motor is up to the owner and of course the money.

I'm leaning more towards a tuff NA engine as that way it will still look clean and tidy as there would only be another carby and some extra fuel lines and rising rate reg.

How much power and revs do you think you could get out of a 7k with this kind of rebuild, I understand it wont rev as much as its little brothers.

hey there, 7k engines arent a very big revver due to the large stroke of the engine, I'm guessing 6.5-7 grand max. with your power, all depends on what you do and cam profile, my 4k just spun 75 horsepower at the rear tyres with big cam and twin webbers and extractors, thats it, and it will rev to 8300rpm  so it may give you a 30-35% increase in power with said modifications. hope this helps

Hey mate bang for buck your better off supercharging it

i have a mate's who"s got a 4k with twin webbers big cam heaps of head work forgies big comprestion he spent over $6000 on buitding it and it only made 64kw atw

and i've bolted a sc14 to a totaly standard 4k with a draw through set up and made 78kw atw running 8psi which cost me $2200 dyno tuned ready to go

currently helping a mate with his 5k efi intercooled set up running over 22psi making over well over 110kw atw smokes 3rd gear at 60

Thanks for that corolla_bitten I think I would be happy with a 30 - 35% increase, I have read some where else about making a 7k rev harder and pretty much all the guy said to do was to get the engine balanced and then have a regrind on the cam, port and polish and if you have the money get larger valves, this way I guess more air and fuel will be entering the chamber that way it will rev harder. If I could get it to rev to 7 grand all day every day I would be stoked I guess lightening the fly wheel would help it rev more aswell.

What sort of budget do you think I should be working around for a complete rebuild of this kind

How hard is it to do a blow through set up with carbies? or is it not worth it.

Going EFI and supercharged what would need to be done to the engine to produce that kind of power and how much money would it take for this to be done properly?

And thanks for the info 1JZKe55. :)

hey a blow through setup is a bit pain to do because of the carby and fuel pressures but it can be done the best thing to do there is go see a carby specialist and ask him what would be the best carby to use and how much to set it up

I take it you want a intercooler other wise i'd just go for a draw through then you could still use your webber and manifold and save your self some cash you say you already have a electronic dizzy, extractors and a rising rate reg all you need is the supercharger and a little bit of pipe work 8psi and your there :y:

the only things you will need to do re jet the webber and re curve the dizzy to suit cam and you should have around 80-90kw and about 300-350nm atw if set up rite be like putting a vn v6 in it

the efi setup on my mates 55 cost a shit load as it is all custom made so if you did it under 7grand i'd call you God ha and thats not including the motor which is full of goodness :P

efi does has its perks tho he can drive his around off boost like a normal rolla or mash the pedal to the floor and the supercharger will engage and off you go

if you stay 8psi or under you can get away with out intercooling or touching the motor but if you wanna run more boost you will need to intercool it and decomp the motor down to about 8.5.1 good forged pistons O'ring the block and head it will take 18psi all day long
