I have hit a slight hurdle in the last stages of my ke30 rebuild. It would appear that my 3k starter isn't strong enough to turn my motor? I can hear the starter engaging the flywheel... it just doesn't turn it? Iv swapped battery's, Checked Earths and swapped the starter with another 3k, but no dice.

 

Is it possible to get a High Torque starter for the 'rolla? and if so, who makes them?

So, the second battery was a good one that easily started the car it came from??

 

Same for the second starter motor??

got enough earths on the motor dude

is ur bat charged enough get at least 3 big earth cables on the motor man

get anouther car with soem jumper cables and double up on that mother she will fire into life

Look for a 5k gear reduction starter. Should easily cranked my high compression 5k. Added bonus is that it is a smaller starter, so more clearance for exhausts. Could remove it without touching the extractors.

It turns by hand, but its tight, guess i might need to pull it out and recheck torque settings.

 

It's fired up a couple of times, but never idled properly. So i rejetted my weber, and whilst doing that realised i had a few manifold leaks. Fixed them, and thats when it started having issues with the starter.

 

Already tried cranking with jumper cables from a running car, same deal, starter engages flywheel, but wont turn motor.

I'm running a starter relay, which has a decent, not huge, but decent earth, but the only wires coming off the starter itself are the switch and the power. Do i want a dedicated earth on the starter itself? if so, where does it hook up? i was under the impression the starter earthed directly onto the block when its bolted on?

if the solenoid is hitting the flywheel but not turning over means the starter motor is FUBAR

That is true- grab a multimeter and measure how much resistance there is between the starter and the battery -ve. Should be less than 5ohms. If its more then you have a bad connection somewhere. I've used the starter mounting bolts as an earthwire point before, but in theory you shouldn't need to.

 

If there's no resistance then either starter is a dud, battery is a dud or motor is too tight. If it turns by hand then motor is not too tight, and if you used jumpers then battery supply is good, and if you've swapped starter I just don't know...

Your starter motor, if it's in good condition, has ample grunt to crank your motor. With a high (11.5:1) comp 5K, I have my 40 year old 3K starter turning it over, although not as well in the current cold weather.

 

There's probably a good chance your starter is flogged out, or like everyone's suggested, electrical connection issues.

i recommend gettin a reduction gear starter made a world of difference less spark more torque

I had this trouble with my rebuild 4k. Ended up being i had forgotten to put the earth cable back on that goes from gb bellhousing to the firewall.
