Hey don't know too much about diffs, just gone off what I've been told previously,

But what's the diff between: welding, mini spool , full spool and a Detroit locker ??

Welded diff = poor mans locked diff, it doesn't let the inside wheel turn freely on tight corners.

welded diff is for the backyard bogans who have borrowed their mates welder, they just fill the thing up with welding rods untill its locked up....the worst way to lock a diff.

 

i was under the impression that a "mini spool" replaces a small part of the diff, possibly the spider gears, in order to lock up the diff. i think this is probably the 2nd best way to "lock a diff"

 

 

a full spool reaplaces everything except the crown wheel, and i think is a probably the best way to lock a differential.

 

 

a Detroit locker is quite a nifty device.

 

not entirely sure on how it works, i did read up on it once but can't remember, it is a form of LSD, but it seems to be more suited to 4wd's and/or trucks, that need the traction for towing or climbing rocks, rather than drifting or racing.

 

from what i remember from reading others experiences, the detroit lockers when used in a road/race car can be a bit agricultural.

The problem with a Detroit Locker is that it is is either Locked (like a spool) or Unlocked (single spinner) and has a nasty habit of switching between the 2 mid corner with some fairly severe and unpredictable changes to vehicle behaviour that go with it. At least with a spool its predictable (i.e. you can predict that you are going to break an axle in the near future)

Nope, you'll need to upgrade the diff.

 

EDIT: Maybe but it'll cost you 1000's better off just upgrading the diff.

It's like everything else, you need to learn how to drive with one.

 

Yes, if you lift off the power halfway through a corner, it will spit you off the road to your firey death. You need to trail the throttle through the corner and the diff wont unlock. Not good for an everyday car though, as they tend to "pig root" at low speed.

 

Also good if you want to drive on two wheels. :)

Ive got 2 welded diffs, one in the car and one spare that I locked last night at work as a spare. Once they break or I find a cheap LSD I will be buying that :)

 

If its for a KE25 it may not be much work to put in a Celica diff which has bolt in LSD options. (Am just unsure width of ke25 diff and celica is I think about 1360mm and no idea of ke25, oh thats TA22 diff as well.

TA22 diffs are wider than 25 diffs.you need to run very + offset rims if you want them to fit under the guards.
