Willis Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 Hey guys, wasn't quite sure where whether to post this in KE or AE discussion but heregoes. Motor - 20v 4AGE Car - KE70 I'm thinking of running a side pipe from my extractors to behind the left wheel somewhere but I'm not too sure if it's a good idea. Don't know much about exhausts other than the fact that I want the highest velocity possible haha. One thing I'm sketchy on is it being too short and risking burnt valves, I don't know if it would be something I'd need to worry about, actually having extractors and all but still, thought I'd ask. I'm mainly thinking of doing it to keep it easy. Nice and simple... Has anyone here run a side pipe from a 4AGE before or can anyone shed some light on them? Just looking for pros and cons etc. Car won't be rego'd so no need to worry about that. Cheers. Quote
Twincam16seca Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 I'm not sure what a short exhaust system would have to do with burnt valves? but to keep the velocity high it wouldn't have to be too small a diameter, unlike a full system where it's possible to decrease the diameter from a 2 1/2 inch to 2 1/4 then a 2inch to keep the velocity of the cooling gas high. With a short system like you want to have I would go for a 2 1/2 inch collector into a 2 1/4 outlet behind the wheel. The short length and diameter of the pipe should keep the velocity at a reasonable speed due to the higher exhaust temp at that length of the system, where as a longer system, such a normal length, the exhaust temp is cooler when exiting the system thus requiring a smaller diameter to keep the exhaust gas velocity high! irokin Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 Just don't forget that people at tracks care about noise levels too. If you're making everyone's ears bleed, you're gonna have a bad time. Aim to keep it under 100dB at least, 95 ideally. Quote
ke70dave Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 especailly at lakeside. i think its even less than 95 there. because some numpty bought a house across the lake from a race track. i can't think of a good reason to run a side pipe, other than "it looks cool". which is probably a good enough reason. but don't think its worth the hassle really. Quote
Willis Posted June 12, 2012 Author Report Posted June 12, 2012 It certainly does look "cool" haha. Pretty sure highway traffic is close to 90dB SPL...And I think a hairdryer isn't too far off either... Some of the cars I hear at QR are well beyond 95dB SPL. Something different anyway. Any negative effects other than noise of course? Quote
Jono.C Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 Hugo, With the rotary AE86 from NZ, His ae86 was 98DB idling or something crazy like that, The track maximum was 95DB, I loved that! Eh, The thing about sidepipes is they're cheap and easy.. Why do a full exhaust system when you don't have to? That's the way i see it anyway.. Quote
Willis Posted June 12, 2012 Author Report Posted June 12, 2012 That's kinda what I was thinking Jono. Just cheap. Quote
irokin Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 Some of the cars I hear at QR are well beyond 95dB SPL. For sure. There are a couple I can think of off the top of my head that well and truly exceed the threshold of pain, 135dB+. Great for irritating everyone in the pits. Quote
Willis Posted June 12, 2012 Author Report Posted June 12, 2012 Threshold of pain is just intense. Considering a gunshot at about 1 metre gets close to it. I don't really care about noise so much. Just kinda easy/cheap to do.. Can anybody point out some cons barring noise.?? Quote
19914afc Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 If you want to still race at lakeside the noise meters are on the left hand side of the track so just put pipe out the right hand side :) haha. Unsure if they do hand held checks there though. Quote
Willis Posted June 12, 2012 Author Report Posted June 12, 2012 Do you know if Lakeside do drift days? Not that I wouldn't want to do some sprinty/circuity kind of driving, just curious.. With the SPL thing, I don't think they'd be able to accurately measure it there...It's hard to accurately measure it anywhere really... Quote
19914afc Posted June 13, 2012 Report Posted June 13, 2012 Nah lakeside doesn't do drift days, too much to hit there not like QR when you just go off track at lakeside you've got steel barriers everywhere to hit. Quote
Willis Posted June 13, 2012 Author Report Posted June 13, 2012 Would still be fun though. Dangerous is fun haha Quote
19914afc Posted June 13, 2012 Report Posted June 13, 2012 I'd still rather not, you have to see the amount of damage it does to cars the are just racing and then run into a wall let alone if you spin out and hit something... Quote
