Has anyone had any success reusing a sump gasket for a K motor?

rubber is all in good condition, no cracks, not too squished, was going to use silicone on both sides and put it back in.

 

Good idea/bad idea?

If the rubber is all ok then it's fine to re-use, ive done it plenty of times. I just use a good RTV sealant sparingly, try not to have dags of it hanging off.

I wouldn't, because if you don't do it right, you have to pull it all off again insitu.

 

They cost bugger all, do it right first time, and don't be tempted to overtighten it.

Don't waste your time with Silicon/RTV either. Get Permatex No. 5 it is much much much MUCH better.

Had good experiences with black and orange Threebond. Also "Toyota Black" Sealant.

 

I wouldn't bother reusing a K engine sump gasket.

 

I'm not even risking it and my K sump gasket is a $40 item on its own!

7k? or is that the genuine toyota price?

I got quoted half that for a 4k one at bursons last week.

 

Actually just for search purposes, had a bit of trouble finding a timing cover gasket set. Found an endurotech one finally, part no GSTCS10E

what would happen if I overtighten it?

I regularly use no sump gaskets at all and use a brand called "Forch" its an aerosol RTV Silicone.

 

In years of doing so i have not had a single failure, i mainly use it to replace older cork gaskets.

 

Toyota have been using this process for the last million years.
