Ke70 1Uz-Fe Which Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am currently putting a 1uz into my ke70, but I'm stuck with my gearbox choice. Motor will be fairly standard, maybe just an exhaust and tune. It's going to be a cruiser with maybe a little bit of track work if the opportunity arises. Any ideas? Manual, auto, price, strength? All ideas and opinions appreciated. Cheers

Quick run down, higher beings feel free to correct

Auto: is cheap and fairly strong but gay for everything other than hoops

The main manual boxes people use with 1/3UZ

W58: can usually find one for around ~500, They are fairly strong but with button clutch and aggressive driving will take its toll. Pretty easy to fit in a KE70 with a bit of hammering.Their is other W series boxes but as far as I know they are all weaker.

R154: Everyone wants them I haven't seen one for sale in a while and it was ~1800, They are strong box people run 800hp+ threw them. Bigger then W58 never heard or seen one in KE70 but you could investigate further.

Another manual box floating around that people are using is GM T56

I don't know heaps about these but they can be had for a lot less then R154's on occasions and rebuild kits etc are mega cheap

Most people say they're as strong or a lot stronger than R154's

Can be fitted up with with auto bellhousing and adapter plate but apparently these are pretty big so would definitely be custom tunnel I assume.

Most or these are 6speed which would be nice but I have no idea on ratios could put a diff ratio in that suits while your putting a different one in.

I am aware that this will never be legal, but I was going to try my luck with Vic club rego. If I have no luck then it is currently registered so will drive it until it is picked up. I have a c4 sitting in the shed and I've seen bell housings from dellows to suit the 1uz, has anyone put a c4 in a ke70 before?

If it has zero chance of being legal on full registration, what makes you think Club Registration is any different in its standards? A modified car like this would be requiring an Engineers Certificate as it is well outside the VicRoads guidelines that apply for both Full/Club Registration. I'm not saying don't go ahead with your project, just saying that you should be aware of what is achievable & what is not.

I love the fact that people think that because they know the rules, no one else does. My mother in law works for vicroads, I am reminded most days of the rules and how my vehicles don't comply with them, this has been the case from the day I met my now wife's family. I will admit I am new to corollas, hence the question of gearbox choice, but my last car was a GQ patrol with a blown ls2 under the bonnet. I became very close with my engineer during that build as the person that I had initially start the builds workmanship wasn't as good as they made it out to be. In short the patrol was pretty much built twice, once by a supposed reputable workshop and then by me, before I could "legally" drive it. I'm not going to make that mistake again. I am looking for advice on gearbox choice, not advice on the rules. I tried to include as much info in my initial post so that I could get the most informed answers, but that obviously hasn't worked. Thanks though for the one proper reply to my question. I will look into the R154, I saw the tremec mentioned on a couple of hot rod pages, but I'm hoping not to mod the tunnel to much. If anyone else has any more productive opinions it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys

Carbonboy is very well informed regarding club reg and has given you a clear explanation of why it won't qualify. As he says, "I'm not saying don't go ahead with your project, just saying that you should be aware of what is achievable & what is not."

People here mean well and simply want you to be under no illusion regarding your chances of getting this in under club reg.

Its_AUDM_yo has concisely addressed your question

Bouncing people is not the way to expect assistance.

Haha plus "KE70 1UZ" for a first time poster during school holidays is something of a cliché around here.

The replies above were some of the politest I've seen on this topic!

Secretly everyone here would love to see you pull it off. But for all the people who've mentioned it, none have done it so far that I've seen.

You've got a C4 laying around, do you have a Windsor? Though I presume you already have a 1UZ. A Windsored KE35 came up on eBay recently and the engine looked to be an excellent fit! It was Victorian too fwiw.

Anyway, pics or it didn't happen.

I realised after I read through my reply that I probably came across fairly harshly, hence the second post apologising. I should have been clearer in my initial post as I can see now from your perspective that it may have seemed a little vague and/or naive. I do have a 302 Windsor that I was initially going to go with but after reading through all I could find regarding v8's in corollas I was worried about the weight, I still want to be able to turn corners in it when I need to. No I don't have a 1uz yet but have one readily available when I want it, unfortunately it doesn't come with a gearbox. I saw Lloyd Smiths ke70 with the 1uz and the ae86drivingclub.com.au post on the conversion and it seemed like a good achievable option. I am hoping to source everything required before I start as my corolla is still a perfect runner and on gas so runs on the smell of an oily rag. I will start a build thread once it all kicks off and no doubt will be chasing more advice in the future so I have no intent on getting on anyone's bad sides. Apologies again.

The easiest way to shoehorn a 1uz in a ke70 is with the autobox a340. also, you can easily pick where you want the selector to go.

Otherwise if you're not going to be doing burnouts every chance you get a w58 will be fine, with light massaging here and there.

Other-Otherwise r154 is ok. expensive for what you get, it won't break for a long time. You'll need a new trans tunnel and a shifter relocation.

You could go stronger but you won't need that unless you're going to rebuild it with crazy turbos etc.

Easiest and by far the cheapest is the auto option, people literally give them away, And you can build them to handle power.
