Toyota have finally revealed what the new Corolla hatch will look like. The concept is called the Auris, and as some of you may already know, this is what the Corolla hatch will be known as in many markets (not Australia though). Toyota will try to make the Auris compete with more premium vehicles like the VW Golf, and the Corolla sedan will stick with it's current market area.

This concept is obviously not exactly what the production vehicle will look like. My guess would be that we can ditch the projector headlights and there will be a more conservative design, as with the tail-lights. The sunroof thing will go to and be replaced with a regular roof. The 19-inch rims will be replaced by 15's, or 16's at best for the basic model - 17's or 18's for premium/sporty models. Don't know if the twin exhausts will stay, but I'm guessing they will, as it seems to be the market trend at the moment. I'd also guess that the six speed manual will stay, as it will mean better fuel economy, plus better performance.

 

The engine for the new model (in Australia at least) will be the 2ZR-FE. Don't expect much of a change from the 1ZZ-FE, as Toyota are only claiming a 3kW & 5Nm gain over the old engine. The 2ZR has dual VVT-i, and don't expect VVTL-i or a G-series head as Toyota seem to have thrown in the towel on each of these. I could be wrong, but I'm not going to admit it. :2thumbs: The new engine is 1kg heavier than the outgoing 1ZZ-FE, has a slightly larger bore and slightly reduced stroke, and is meant to provide better fuel economy whilst maintaining a relatively low 10.0:1 compression ratio (the same as the 1ZZ-FE).

 

Personally I can't get too excited about the new Corolla hatch, as I think there is far too much similarity between it and the current model, with a few small hints of Mazda3 thrown in. It's not very well done and instead of leading the design crowd, it is being a follower, true to Toyota form. Would be nice to see a Sportivo or GT4 version though.

And I forgot to add - the backend is just plain ugly.

Hmm, not sure that I like it. The front end looks the same as the past two models, the rear looks similar to the current model but more ugly, and from the side angle looks too compact. Like it could be confused for a Yarris??

I like it, just need to change the tail lights.

I like the sound of this Teddy. What I think Toyota really need to do (although it's probably too late to do it now), is make a new Sprinter. Keep the Corolla FWD, but have a similarly sized car which is RWD, using the same engines as the Corolla, and preferably a six speed manual transmission. It could be built cheaply in two door coupe and three door fastback/hatchback variants, and I'm sure with the popularity of drifting & Initial-D, it'd sell heaps. Plus they could do a different bodied convertible version (as in, it won't look anything like the coupe or fastback) and have an MX5 competitor.

 

As for the Corolla, they really should have got the Lexus team to design it, because they're doing some nice stuff at the moment.

Do these guys pop a few E's before they design modern cars or what? Why don't they go back to old school styling..

The one thing that i do like about it is the look and positioning of the exhaust.

Yeah, the exhausts look sweet - pity the rest of the car is really boring in places and really crap looking everywhere else. Hell, the Yaris looks WAY better.

BTW, from the sketches I've seen of the new Corolla sedan, it's just going to be completely boring.
