one thing i have noticed is that if i leave the engine idling for aaagess, it does start to over fuel i think...burbles and carries in untill you give it a rev up the street. so i dunno what that means... it is possible it may be rich on idle causing the miss at idle or could be oil fouling the plugs. also try this fuel saving technique.......put a 50 mm block under the accelerator pedal just joking there but really try to examine your driving style to ascertain wether you are using the accelerator a bit more open than it needs be. after a few years in the carby game it became common to see people looking to save fuel. when every thing was done that was possible to have the car run perfect it still used more fuel than their mates car,it was at these times I would go to the bench and show the the latest in fuel saving technology.......a 50mm piece of jarrah. have you checked ignition components and timing are the tappets properly set? pay attention to the exhaust ones is the air filter dirty make sure the choke is not sticking I hope this helps or gives food for though regards brian old corolla bloke

but could it have been better if you had port matched it.? whilst in your case it felt as though there was no difference , it should be noted there is an adavantage in port matching all production engines. it will contribute to smoother running and in some cases improved engine performanec. yes you can do it...will you notice a decrease in perfomance. most likely not however in many cases you will notice the engine does not run as smoothly and there is a flat spot on acceleration from light throttle cruising a case in point is to put a single DCOE onto a manifold that was designed around a ke20 head{usually bigport} and then put it all on a 4k.std head. it will run like a dog until port matched then in 99% of cases be ok. the engine will not run away brian

I would say the thermostat is sticking open......time to replace as it will only get worse and do it all the time. cheers brian

count the teeth on the ring{big} gear and divide that figure by the amount of teeth on the pinion {small}gear cheers bm

[ if you do change the head don't forget to port match the manifold .....smal port manifold runing into bigport head loses gas veloctiy and causes port wetting......no not that sort of wetting.ttt port wetting is where the atomised fuel condenses into bigger droplets at low engine speed this shows up as a soogy engine response and some times misfires at light throttle cruising. its not as drstic as going the other way of big manifold small ports but is a pain to track down cheers brian

[ suggest you do a plug colour test don't forget to use new plugs cheers brian

how does your cam look? did it bend the arm of the pump? cheers bm

an often overlooked and easy way to stiffen the body is by plating and welding the crossbrace between the chassis rails at the front under the radiator. very easy to do remove bumper and rad the stitch in a piece of angle. you will need to make some cuts to the angle to shape it of course. this inaddittion to the strut brace will have a notice affect cheers bm

has this engine been built with flat tops specifically to suit the 3k-h head? if not then put the 5K head back on. cheers brian

there was an old toyota six that is 2600. it was in the old crowns and could be made to go fairly hard......but is it worth it? cheers brian

i used a bert jones 30/70 with good results in a 4k reasonable low end and more top end than the standard twin carbs could deliver cheers brian

wasnt talking about cricket.....and I agree they sholudnt have the game on tv instead of motorsport. just trying to make a point of "you never know who is watching now days" brian

i going to tell you why I don't go on cruises......COPS. they arent dumb and they can read. I know you are joking around but they wont care. they do monitor a lot of websites maybe not this one however the simple mention of "spirited"driving is enough for them to become suspicious. start times and places are up there for them to see.......so don't be surprised if you see them. ask a couple of the old rollaboys club admins about hassles good luck with the cruise and drive safe

I would go for a set of extractors and a sports exhaust first then whack on a 3k head. if you could get hold of a single side draft 40 dcoe weber and and maniflod to suit all this would give a bice little motor cheers brian

How High Will It Rev, Before It Goes ?
old corolla bloke replied to Doogs's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
whilst performing burnout antics years ago with a balanced 4k and heavily modified that had good valve springs...scat of all things ,twin webers etc.It broke the gear box input shaft and went bang ........lots of smoke from engine and tyres. hole on sump and block was looking at tach just as shaft broke.....8500 dialled up then big over rev.....bang -
yep your right they don't and its the auxillary venturi........so I'm old must have been up past my bed time anyways I hope he knew what I meant from the other bit about sliding in last cheers old corolla bloke

sounds lean to me... or the progression is wrong...try this its fairly easy. warm up the engine set the idle mixture correctly{as a guide it should be 3/4 to a full turn out} now run the engine to the rev range that the miss JUST begins to happen.......hold it there with the idle adjustment screw now wind the idle screws out....richer . say 1 full turn if the miss cures then she is too lean on the low speed jet. I would guess the jet should be a 50f9 or a 45f8 the other thing to check is the secondary venturi......the front bit in the barrel that slides in last check the stamping......I recommend a 4.5, if yours is a 3.5 or a 5 your can get this type of dramas cheers old corolla bloke

shhhh people will know I'm old!!! daughter what daughter............ah well married 25 years today OLD corolla bloke

that is pretty much what Ive run on 3k /4k whith mild cams.............it may vary engine to engine a bit but should be drivable you would be better off with twin but, due to the pulses that manifold creates it usually idles lumpy and quiet fast 1000/1100 twins are smoother and at 900 old corolla bloke

in the past Ive shaved 100thou from one of the later 3k heads then the bastard pinged its butt off until I put a bigger cam in and twin webers........probably still pinged but i couldnt hear it. try about 70 thou as a start old corolla bloke
-
what size weber.......assuming 40 dcoe try this idle 45f8 emlusion f15 main 125 air corrector 165 pumps 35 aux venturi 4.5 choke 32 soft pump spring long pump rod make sure you match port the manifold/ head if you are using a small port head.......you MUST not have a step or it will run like crap old corolla bloke

Speedometer Stuffed In My Ke70
old corolla bloke replied to -RoBeRtO-'s topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
in my experience, all be it limited. the common cause for this type of problem is that the speedo cable is broken about 50 to 75mm out of the gear box at the bend in the cable. this can be checked simply by undoing the cable from the drive and pulling the inner cable. the flicking is caused by the cable ends rubbing together and transfering partial drive to the speed head. should this not be the case and the cable is not damaged its easy to push it back making sure it has engaged the speedo head drive. old corolla bloke -

i reckon Id be going to a wrecker and getting a speedo cable pretty soon old corolla bloke -
please don't be offended by this question..........if you have no tacho of what use is this information......you still wont know how many revs in doing. does this mean you are going to buy a tacho old corolla bloke
