Why do you think I now work for Ultratune?? That and I was sick of getting yelled at by too many people over stupid communication stuffups... Robert.
-
A salesman at my previous workplace suggested (seriously) that we should tuck some rag up around and under a leaking turbocharger on a nissan patrol to stop it from leaking oil.... I confronted the boss about it and APPARENTLY he was "only joking".... I don't think so. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Robert.

kylie's ke55 with a 4k is still reasonably drivable (although a bit loud) and she gets asked all the time if it is a rotary.... damn bogans that don't know what a camshaft does and what a rotary sounds like.... Robert.
-
either some drunk bathurst v8 race bogan or someone who knew the car and saw it sitting there in the yard... If it was a legit on work time job then I suppose insurance might cover it? but it was a foreign order (ie I'm fixing it on my own time at work) which makes it a bit of a pain... damn stickers cost $80!! I don't understand why people can't leave stuff alone... If I saw someone vandalising a car (even if it was not my own car) I'd .... thump them!! Robert.

normal to use a bit of oil, especially as it gets towards the end of the service interval. Subaru's used to use litres of the stuff when brand new (running in oil must have been very thin) and now the 1st service is at 5k instead of 12.5k, customers wouldn't check it and run out of oil and blow the engines up.... I'd top it up, make sure the car is on level ground and check it every morning before you start the engine. Keep an eye on it too, if it doesn't use it again then it might not have had enough in it to begin with. Robert.

there is always something to be gained by putting a NICE exhaust on, not too big, not too small, and not too loud!! I'd compare the ones you have to the ones that are on there, and that same thought about the oval pipe of the Xmember had occurred to me when working on the ae93. Robert.

Flipping Leaves Ke35 Cheapest Way To Lower

I'm definitely on the bandwagon of those saying "don't do anything until you can do it properly", I mean what is the point of doing a job twice? and cars rarely handle well unless the suspension is done properly. I'd like to point out that I've recently purchased an ae93 seca from someone on this site and I'm slightly mind-boggled as to how there came to be retreaded tyres (with two being well and truly illegal/worn/bald/canvas showing/flatspots etc) and a woodgrain steering wheel..... to my mind, I'd be putting nice tyres on it and leaving the steering wheel stock... (it now runs pirelli p6's in the correct size on new steel rims) I'd also like to say I'm mind-boggled as to how all the suspension bushes came to be replaced, along with the shock absorbers, which would lead you to beleive someone was chasing bad handling problems, but the steering rack D clamp that locates it and secures it to the body was loose and the bush was chomped out, meaning the steering rack moved up to 80mm in relation to the body.... I'm all for car modification, and I'm an avid car enthusiast myself, as well as being a motor mechanic, but I don't quite get why people shortcut things, or spend money on modification when the vehicle needs vital repairs. Keep your car in great mechanical condition before you modify it and then take the time effort and money to do it properly. To be fair it might not have been the previous owner that did it, maybe the owner before?? I'm not sure of the history of the car... but I digress.... Ultimately everybody can do what they like, I just don't understand what was going through some people's heads at the time ;) Robert. -

lol I would applaud your guts if you went and made your own parachute.... Robert. -
some lowlife scum (typical orange denizen i'm afraid) stole an "8" sticker off each side of the car probably saturday night while it was parked in the yard at work.... so I'm still in a bit of trouble... But on the plus side I sold the subaru ;) so I don't have to worry about servicing it, tyres, rego, or that pesky ticking noise lol  Suspension and then *hopefully* a better quieter exhaust :( if she'll let me that is! Robert.

Flipping Leaves Ke35 Cheapest Way To Lower

obviously if the springs are still captive, and you have only chopped the end of the spring with a grinder its still going to work as a spring, just your car will be a little bit closer to the bump stops, and thus might bottom out a little easier... I'm still not quite sold on the idea of lowering a car either, for the amount of hassle it is to drive it around and the amount of hassle it is with the police picking on you. We still drive a standard height ke55 around and it handles pretty well ;) But hey, at the end of the day it all comes down to this: It is your car and you can do what you like with it! Robert. -
I have just put the ke55 back together, the clutch pressure plate had broken internally and refused to let go of the driven plate. I have replaced the clutch, and while it was apart I had the flywheel lightened and rebalanced with the new clutch. I also did the rear main oil seal at the same time, so theoretically I should be happy for a while ;) Now for those of you not familiar with my engine, it is a modified 4k, 10.7:1 static compression and a crow cams reground cam that I think was about 276 degrees duration... it has a regraphed electronic distributor, and everything internally in the engine is balanced. I have twin 1.5" HS4 SU carburettors, 4-2-1 extractors, and a thermofan on a three-row radiator. I previously had a stock cast iron flywheel installed which was around the 8kg mark or so. I weighed the flywheel yesterday at approx 5.6kg. They machined all of that lip off the back of it, skimmed the rest of the back, brought the valley on the back a little bit further out, then got all carried away and scalloped the front of it so the material that the clutch doesn't actually need to bolt on to is no longer there. Pretty nice looking machine job too  I haven't driven the car yet, other than in and out of the shed, and I've noticed immediately that it revs much much much quicker! Kylie drove it home (it is her car after all) and she tells me that it accellerates HEAPS quicker, gets to 100km/hr in hardly any time at all. Would I say that it was worth the money I spent to have it lightened - YES!! I have some photos, but I haven't managed to get them onto the computer to upload yet, I will endeavor to do so later tonight or tomorrow :( Robert.

there are ways and means of doing everything that isn't supposed to be done.... until you drop a valve hey keith? If you get a cam reground and don't go too crazy it won't sound lopey. I've heard a lot of cams that sound pretty close on stock. I have a rather lopey one in the ke55 (lots of overlap) which makes tuning kinda fiddley. I'm dying of curiosity as to how my new flywheel will go considering the camshaft.... I weight it at approx 2.5kg less than stock this afternoon ;) Robert.

and the shock absorbers seem to be vertical ;) -
oooh oooh oooh I know!!! (very excited here) convert it to a electric car with massive torque electric motors, and engineer an audio setup to make it sound like a rotary while it is driving!! with the way battery technology is at the moment you'd probably get similar range as a grumpy little rotary's fuel milage... Robert.
-
stock standard engine muffled really really well, spend all your money on a stereo, record a rotary taking off, and play it very loudly with the windows down everytime you take off from the traffic lights... you do realise how painful your car will be to drive!! in all liklihood it will be SLOWER than 90% of cars in stock standard form that you find on the street, it will CHOMP the fuel, be a pig to drive and the police (if they are in their right mind) will defect you for something... anything... they will find something! Either put a rotary in it and live with it or do some sensible modifications so your car actually runs nicely! Robert.
-
lol.... if you can fix it with cable ties, rag, and banana skin then you should work in used cars! Robert.

I finished work around 6pm on friday night, and I had to replace a rear wheel bearing and a CV boot on my brothers ae93 after work. I ripped into the wheel bearing first, stopped for a bite to eat halfway through, and by the time I got to the CV boot it was maybe 8:30pm or so... I ripped the CV shaft out, pulled it apart, cleaned it up, took the new boot out of the box and found it was the wrong one!! fat chance of getting a hold of auto one to get the right boot at that time of the night... anyway, as I had to drive the car home, I had to pop it all back together. Now I was replacing the boot on account of there being a small (10-15mm) gash in it and grease leaking out and water leaking in and so on. Now the BEST intended application of super glue is on rubber... you can see where this is going can't you... I cleaned the boot up, superglued the split together, let it set, then reassembled the joint using castrol agri-grease (which I'm told is rated for CV joints) and popped the second hand clamps back on. I've done 70km in the car since with no signs of grease leaking out of the joint.... Obviously not an ideal repair, but I'm not planning on pulling it apart again until it leaks/splits.... Anyway, thats my funny story of the day ;) Robert.

for what its worth having driven some OMG FULLY SIC cars (not corollas) I don't think its worth chopping springs... I drove a hyundai excel x1 up and down parramatta road a few times (too many) with springs cut that low that it sat on the bump stops, and talk about BOUNCE!!! everybody thought I was doing it on purpose or something.... never again.... but hey, it is your car :P Robert. -
what flavour of penrite are you running? any particular reason for the switch? I'm having a guess here that dohc 16v 7afe needs an oil with higher shear resistance and possibly temp resistance than pushrod little 4k (or pushrod big lump of a holden 202 etc) so I should run something like the edge sport 25w50 as opposed to a gtx3 20w50 or similar.... Robert.
-
anyone see any dramas with me running castrol edge sport 25w50 in the 7afe? put new valve stem seals on, and cleaned a lot of carbon off everything, and then took it for a good bed in procedure type drive.... and its still blowing some smoke (with the magnatec 15w40 in it) Robert.

same sort of effect as removing the gearbox, disassembling, and lapping the synchros in... when it crunches the problem is that the brass synchro is not gripping on the cone of the gear, thus not synchronising the speed of the gear when it is selected and crunching.. I've done this on two vehicles so far and avoided having to remove a gearbox for a relatively minor problem (one gear crunching) obviously if your bearings are gone, or if something else is a problem then removal and repair is more appropriate. Robert.
