I digress now, but I reckon I'd love to have a go at an orbital engine on LPG, something using a six stroke cycle, an electric ke corolla, or a compressed air powered ke corolla.... all interesting thoughts, probably unlikely to happen. Robert.

I reckon straight lpg injected in a 12:1 na or something turbo would be rather interesting... Robert

yeah I know Beau... Will have a chat to anyone I can :) Keith and I are planning on having a play with some leaves sometime too :) Robert. -
Pics Of Leaf Spring Setups On Race Cars

meh, top secret race spec leaf setups that nobody will share obviously. Oh well, worth a shot :) Robert. -
hey just wondering if anyone is running LPG in your KE corolla, and if so, is your engine modified? Any thoughts on fitting say a 260 degree "maximum torque" camshaft on an lpg engine with minimum modifications? Robert.

just like all computers, sometimes they put up with a hiding and sometimes they die unexplicably. we had a hiace trh203r ecu (under drivers seat) die due to water damage and it couldn't be repaired either.... not nice. Robert.

Pics Of Leaf Spring Setups On Race Cars
rob83ke70 replied to rob83ke70's topic in KExx Corolla Discussion
and was the leaf upside down in relation to the other leaves? did you drill the holes and rivet it yourself? -
hey I know a few people here half extra half leaves added and strange things done to rear suspension on your ke corolla esp the race car ke corollas. Can I trouble you guys for pics of your setup on here? Or is that divulging too much secret race information? :) :), you have an extra half leaf added to the front of your spring packs in your rally car? how is it attached to the leaf? do you bolt it to the centre bolt of the pack? do you drill a hole in a short leaf and then add it, or add a long leaf and lop the rear part off? is the leaf upside down? are there other ways of clamping the front of the pack together? I'm just chasing pics of ke corolla setups at the moment, trying to gather some information as to what to play with. Robert.

I'm adding my support for the grease method. find a piece of steel the right diameter (an offcut or something) or a socket extension bar. have to pack grease in tight and hit it, then repack and repeat process about 5 or 6 times, works a treat. I've used it countless times at work. I've also used the tool and I didn't like it as much as the grease. I had to pull a strange looking spigot out of an XG ute not too long ago, and the bearing puller took the inner part of the bearing out then I used the grease trick to get the outer part of the bearing out. If I lived near you I would come up and show you.... hell, if the motorcycle had a tyre on it I'd make a special trip up to show you (any excuse for a ride and to meet a fellow car enthusiast is worth it) Robert.

thats cool!!! didn't actually picture anybody going to that much trouble, its always "adaptor plate with large carburettor" that you see everybody do... Robert.

heres a pic (not a very good one though) of the vehicle in question.... did two trips to canberra (with a few engine issues) successfully towing that trailer to bring two cars back.... went up lidster hill on the cargo road in 2nd gear as I wasn't flogging it hard (scared of it overheating at the time) Robert.

Hey I'm just after a few opinions on options I'm thinking about for my new tow vehicle. The vehicle in question is a YH81R Toyota Dyna 100 dual cab. It currently has a 4y 2200cc petrol engine with a g55 gearbox and a 4.875:1 ratio diff, running 185r14lt tyres. It has engine problems (blown head gasket at least) which mean that I have to pull the head and/or engine out and have a play around with it. I will also be fitting a heavy duty radiator to it as well. It currently is set up for petrol and lpg. When the engine is apart, I'm thinking about the merits of getting the camshaft reground. The cam I was thinking about was a tighe 300AT, with 260 degrees advertised duration and 0.412" of lift, running standard hydraulic tappets. I will be keeping the standard petrol carburettor on it and probably keeping the LPG setup. More than likely standard exhaust and inlet as well. Has anybody ever driven a hilux/hiace/dyna with this engine and a tweaked camshaft? I'm after some opinions on whether this would be worth the extra trouble. It is a pretty nice torquey little engine now, but having more torque was never a bad thing. It currently has a 4.875:1 diff ratio in it as well, I was thinking about putting a 4.3:1 diff ratio in instead, to bring the revs (and subsequent noise level) down when driving on the highway. As it is now with the 4.875 ratio it tows car trailers and cars and all the rest of that heavy stuff very very well. It isn't a fast vehicle (100km/hr is screaming off its head) but who needs a fast tow vehicle? with the 4.3 ratio diff in it, do you think it will still be as good for towing heavy stuff? I suspect I may find myself spending more time in 4th instead of 5th when towing, and when not towing, it may be a lot more comfortable at 100-110km/hr on the highway. With the radiator upgrade and head gasket issues and mixture issues (was running very lean for sometime due to air leaks into carburettor) it should bring the temperature down especially on the highway, which should quieten the cooling fan down. Driving it around narromine (somewhat warm weather) the fan would come on a fair bit (viscous coupling mechanical fan) but driving around orange it would hardly come on if at all (cooler weather). Driving on the highway however (presumably doing 5000rpm at 100km/hr) the fan would come on pretty much all the time (in its current condition anyway) which makes it rather noisy.... I'm just after some opinions anyway on the matter. I have to finish putting a pajero engine back together and putting it into the pajero before I can sneak the dyna into the corner at work and rip the head off and inspect the engine to determine exactly what I need to do to it. Robert.

omg lets make my 4k sound like a tractor!!! if you take the exhaust baffles out/mufflers off your k engine (or anything else) it will be incredibly loud, attract the attention of police (and the sort of trashy feral girls you see walking the ghetto around here) and it will send you deaf. it will drone really bad, and sound more like a tractor than anything else... oh and you won't get a gain in power either. if your engine is stock or close to it get a 1.75" system with straight through perforated tube resonator (as long as you can fit under there) and a straight through perforated tube muffler, preferable with a 2" or smaller tip, and it won't be droney and will actually sound nice when you get into it. if you have work done to your engine, go a 2" system. Robert.

ok here is my 2c... twin carburettors, even twin downdraughts will be better than a single carburettor, especially a weber on an adaptor plate on a standard manifold. think about it, the sprinter manifold has twice as much room for air to enter, and the air that enters does not have to split in four directions. This will give you better breathing. If you do some reading up on modifying mini a series engines, they keep going on about how they go better with multiple carburettors largely due to the manifold design being vastly improved... to make your engine go better you really need to change some other bits though to make more of a difference. what sort of camshaft are you running? have you increased your compression ratio? are you running electronic ignition? these all make a huge difference, and I would really reccomend tweaking your camshaft profile before getting too carried away about carburettors or exhausts... Robert.

by converter I think I mean mixer or LPG carburettor doodad thingiewhatsit or somesuch something. the thing that allows the gas to flow into the air stream/air duct before the carburettor. After some googling I think you would call it a gas carburettor... very oldschool looking thing. Robert.

Does Anybody Know If Bucket Seat Are Legal???
rob83ke70 replied to Rolla_Baby's topic in Automotive Discussion
You will have to take it to someone who is an actual engineer - a qualified licensed engineer. Mechanics are not engineers. There are some, but most mechanics are trained and qualified as just mechanics. -
burns some oil, i think out of valve stem seals/valve guides. the head gasket is blown and this has to be repaired. The engine was run for some time without an air filter in dusty conditions, but the lpg converter seems to have caught the dust, and i don't think the rings/bores are stuffed. I was kinda hoping to sort the oil pressure problem out before ripping the cylinder head off. Should the bores be stuffed (which i don't think they are) then the engine will come out as well. oils only 5k old although it was doing it with fresh oil. don't think there is a whole lot of coolant in the oil either (doesn't seem that way) it is just pressurising the cooling system.... The oil pump/bearings etc are 130k old at the most and it has had semi-regular/regular oil changes all its life. Robert.
-
new filter did not fix the problem. improved slightly, but still takes maybe 2 seconds for the light to go out when dead cold, and maybe a second or so with it sitting for four hours. any other ideas? once started and oil pressure is up it seems fine... which would rule out worn bearings because they get worse when warmed up... Robert.

they don't drive like my kylie does i hope.... kylie is going to be sideways everywhere when i put the rear swaybar back in the ke55 :lolcry: (either tomorrow or thursday depending on how slow orange wheel alignments are with my mount bushes) Robert.

put a z68 on it in a ryco flavour, noted the box says "with anti-drain valve" and it seems much better so far. the test will come tomorrow morning when I start it cold. the fleetguard filter appeared to have an anti drain of some sort fitted, and looking up the website (cummins filtration) it apparently does have one fitted... not quite sure what is going on still... Robert.
-
doesn't it have a much smaller filter area? would this mean it would block quicker? i'm starting to get a bit of a headache about this.... compared a pile of toyota/aftermarket filters in the stockroom just then, everything, including the fleetguard filter i pulled off the 4y engine has an anti drain back valve... I've always used a z68 on the corolla (4k) and have never had a drama with it, but its in a much healthier state than the 4y... what about a z418? Robert.
-
felix, you are running a z386 on a 4k? might have a squiz in the filter book tonight. pulled the little valve/spring/doodad out of the bottom of the filter housing (part the filter screws on) and had a look, can't see any problems... Robert.

hey I'm putting this in the ke corolla discussion as it is closer to a k motor than anything else. The engine in question is a 4y 2.2lt (which as you all should know is a larger, uprighted 5k more or less) and it takes a z68 the same as a k engine. my problem is that the oil pressure appears too low when first started. the longer you leave it (eg overnight) the longer it takes to get oil pressure back up again. It feels much like if you drained the oil out of the filter and then installed the empty filter and restarted it. the filter is a fleetguard equivalent of a z68, and the oil is 15w40 and about 5,000km old. this has been happening for some time though and i haven't got around to having a look at it. is there a drainback spring/valve in the filter housing on the side of the block? there isn't one in the z68 is there? anybody encountered this before? once the pressure comes up it is perfectly ok no rattles or knocks or lifter noise or anything like that, its only when you start it up after it has been sitting for some time. Robert.

this is the ke70 we are talking about? let me know if you want a hand with anything, I'm accompanying kylie to bathurst this weekend for a khanacross but other than that i normally am up for anything on a weekend. the ke55 has an aftermarket rear swaybar (installed so long ago nobody knows anything about them) which is 14mm diameter, and the stock front swaybar, the rear bar makes an incredible difference to oversteer/understeer and just how the car handles. bigger swaybar on the ke70 would do the same sort of thing as adding one on a ke30/55 i would imagine. I never got the hang of driving my ke70 well :lolcry: didn't have it long enough. Robert.

I agree... I've had a corolla for years and I've had countless amounts of people bag it out cause it's a rollie. You get used to it after a while. No one really bags mine out seriously in front of my face any more - it looks a little too serious :P I've actually had a few offers to sell it lately for what I would call an exorbitant amount of money (kids these days! more money than sense) But anyway - what grinds my gears. There's a person i have about a half an hour overlap with at work, he's just a shitkicker like me, but he thinks he's big and hot stuff. Drives nothing but commodores, he's close with our manager, I've heard a million dodgy stories off other workmates that they've found drugs when he's been there, that he's the reason another guy got sacked (the other guy told the manager that the guy was spoiling auto oil off and then going out and putting it in his car so the manager went back through the camera footage and found video of the guy that dobbed him in keeping an old crusty pie for himself that was only going to be chucked out with the rest as they were too old, then he got fired) Now I've gotten the shits lately because I can not handle someone trying to boss me around who isn't a manager and he had a go at me the other night about not emptying rubbish (bin was locked, key was missing) he usually comes in of a night and I was quite sure that if you don't say hello to him he doesn't breathe a word to you...sure enough I didn't say hello to him one night when he walked in... he didn't say anything to me just started going about his job while banging and slamming everything he touched. tell you the truth he kinda scares me...I'm thinking about finding another job where I don't work by myself/with psychopath closet wife bashers. Or at least asking for shifts where I'm not left alone with him But again, this is what grinds my gears, he's in with the manager, he can do whatever he likes and not get in shit but as soon as the rest of us manage to piss this guy off by not having the drinks in a dead straight row or the pies not put correctly (i.e. in the most OCD straight lines you've ever seen) we get in so much shit.... Stupid managers who are easily persuaded by younger blokes...
