So, there was this eclipse thing today, and fortunately for me, Cairns was the only place on the planet to view it in full.

Pictures fail to do it justice. Truly and literally breathtaking.

You can see the moon progressing across the sun, slowly covering it, but the ambient light doesn't change much. Then suddenly (in like, seconds) BAM its dark. Like when they turn the lights down in a movie theatre.

There is still some light... But instead of the full spectrum you're left with only the wavelengths from the corona and solar prominences, and the moon's edge has a red ring.

Everything becomes deathly silent... Birds, insects etc, and the wind picks up. Its the most bizarre experience.

The light is what strikes you the most though. So surreal.

Anyhoo, pics. Taken by a friend who happens to be a professional. (Slightly better gear than my SGII)

There's probably a zillion pics and vids on the net by now, there's something like 100 thousand extra people in town right now from all over the world. Including some dudes from NASA and a whole bunch of celebrities, for some reason.

Met Cameron Diaz on the beach this morning. She got old, man... Old.
