4age Carb'd

Recommended Posts

Dude, if you set them up right the first time, you DON'T have to keep tuning them! My engines go on the dyno once a year, and most of the time we don't touch them. And there's more than one person in here who can give you a reference for what they go like.

evidence is always better than hearsay. if it works for you many of you, maybe my mate was just wrong in his ways. so would you say it was just the initial tune on my friends car..? it couldnt handle cold starts basically it would just send it out of tune?

Did he have it dyno'd? The thing with Weber's is that although you can give them a vague tune on the bench, that will allow you to start and drive around, unless you give them a run-up with all the gadgets attached, you're only kidding yourself about the tune. A good set-up by someone competent (as opposed to many establishmens these days who if it doesn't have a computer attached, they start spinning in circles, flapping like a chook), and you won't have to touch it again. My cars never have a problem starting, be it 40 degrees, or as happened last year, -8 degrees. It's one of those things that if you do it properly, spend the money, you'll be rewarded by endless amounts of induction noise, and spend your time looking for tunnels to drive through. :)

Sorry guys but I'm going to have to agree with redwarf on this one, i too have a rolla with twin 45mm webers, the only money i have ever spent on these carbs was "the initial rebuild and tune"!it cost a lot of money first up, but sooooo worth it. i have never ever had a problem since, never had to get them re-tuned, never a problem on cold starts, the thing gets revd to 8 thousand revs every time i drive it! Yet still not a prob with the carbs!

what figure (hp) normally a set of webber carbs can produce..?? with stock internal 4AGE (86).. seriously need to know..

Without wanting to sound smart, whatever you can squeeze out of them, and how talented the bloke tuning them is, what timing you're prepared to run... etc.

I know someone who's sucessfully tuned a set of Keihan moto carbs on a 4AGE. He has the advantage of working on lotus sports cars that run similar carbs, using the lotus visualisation software he got them running perfect. On a dyno this thing has hit 10,000rpm pulling around the 170bhp mark from memory.

The igniton side of things is more of a challenge. I'd personally wait for a cheap crane ignition to show up on ebay, all the carby distributors people graft on work, but I don't think mechanical or vaccum advance cuts it with a motor like a 4AGE.

It wouldn't be hard to make a custom circuit that would detect the pulse from a standard dizzy or (preferably) a crane module that would alternate the signal between two sets of coils for wasted spark. You could even go to COP coils. You'd use EFI igniters to fire the coils.

I wonder how much interest there'd be on a nice module for running carbs on old rigs with individual coils, it quite simple to build. If there was some real interest on a module I'd make a fully programmable one that has adjustable advance / retard.
