Head Porting+ Custom Efi Manifold

Featured Replies

g'day guys, i am just about to start porting my 3tc head just finished striping it and now its sitting in degreaser,

it will be off for 2tg size valves once ported but i realy need to know how far i can port it without going into the water jackets,

also at school I'm starting to make a efi manifold for my 3tc, i will be using 3s*e manifold/plenum bits,

things i need to remember are,

holes for the brake booster

holes for injectors

what else will i have to work out?, I'm having abit of a late night memory lapse

any and all help woll be greatly appreciated

Usually portings done on the PORTS.

Personally I think the only way you're going to be able to see is to cut up another head. Going by what the PR guys are doing you can port them out a hell of a long way.

Injector mounts: http://www.vpw.com.au/productgroup.asp?Cat...p;PrdGrpID=2491

You're going to need to sort out a fuel rail and a way to attach it. You'll also need to decide on what style of injectors you're going to use because that will affect the fuel rail setup. For the brake booster you can use a weld on AN fitting and use a AN->barb fitting. VPW sells them too.

thanks guys. ben i recon i could whip some up on the lathe with little effort, and hopfully i can use the 3s fuel rail or find something at the wreckers if not

i will get another head with some hope and cut it up

tell you what if you can get me measurements ill send you some free, pending my teacher will let me do it on the lathe

Once I was looking at a fuel rail for a ca20 motor and between each injector on the rail there was enough room to cut tap a thread etc. So if you got a 3S rail cut out the holes the injectors seal in and weld them to some aluminum pipe OR cut a thread and join with a piece of pipe the right length would be a DIY fuel rail made easy. Saves machine work. But would need a TIG welder for the aluminum.

why can't you use a complete 3s set-up? like the injectors and fuel rail?

just mod the manifold a little..?

apparently you can set-up a descent quality mig welder for aluminium, i was looking into it a while back.

Sure can, however its difficult to strike and maintain an arc on even the cleanest alum. Makes a really cool green arc and some really nasty fumes too!

Yeah, I've been playing with a mig at work that's set up to run alloy. Temperamental to say the least :S

ok guys, started on my manifold, ill be using a megasquirt ecu to run this so there diagrams will help me with what i need and how to go about it,

head is ready to be ported,

i will post up some pictures of my manifold once i have tacked it together, but its basicly going to be a cut down 2tc manifold with a 3" pipe plenum welded to it, i will be using a 3sge or 3sfe throttle body as i have one and it will mount to the plenum easy, still undecided on injectors, think ill need something around 400cc but tell me what you think, i will also be making a custom fuel rail from some aluminum, shouldnt be too much of an effort

What kind of HP are you chasing? I'll calculate a safe injector size for you. What diameter are those throttle bodys (mm)?

  • Author

i will probably be chasing 250hp but that will be on the next engine and I'm not overly sure that it wont go on my currnet engine,

so 250hp

52mm from memory

thanks ben theres a calculator on the megasquirt website but i wasnt sure how to use it,

cheers casey,

ps did some more work on it this arvo at school, got the throttle body mount flange thing cut off and it looks like it will adapt to my 3" pipe nicely, pics on monday if i remember

Basically I use kW x 2.08 = smallest injector size for target power. Usually you end up with a duty around 90% for an injector this size.

So 250hp is roughly 185kw meaning the smallest injector is 385cc.

52mm is pretty small! I'd be hunting down something more like 70mm at least.

thanks for that , do you know of any injectors that are pretty basic (meaning will work with megasquirt) and that size, i have access to allot of older wrecked cars so it could be worth a try,

thanks
