well i guess really what i want to get out of this engine is reliablilty first, then decent power and sound, I'm not expecting great things from this engine, i mean hell, i only paid $100 for it :D but i want an increase from standard

 

ive also been told by a friend of mine who is "in the know" about ke-30's and he suggested that i get get rid of the twin carbs and replace it with a single carb from a 2l cortina, does that sound right? casue he said i will have to tune the twin carbs all the time???

i think he may be confusing the carbs with twin sidies....

 

a twin throat weber will work ok, a 2l cortina one maybe a little large... iv got 2, one off a 1600 sport escort and one from a 1300gt, one of those will work ok i reckon. damn its been a long time since i played with carbs.... :D

the toyota standard twin carbs off the 3K-B engine are absolute shite, from my experience, you are better off using the 2L cortina as a single downdraught, i also have 1 of these lying around in my garage on a port matched manifold.

flirty 30, what do you want from the engine ?, if you want some power, i would suggest saving your money, buying a 5K and working that, if you search this site enough, you will find alot of information.

 

Xany, i think i might know of a couple of twin carbie downdraught manifolds, which i could get to revhead, to send over to you ?

It all depends on what you want from your engine. I ran the K-B carbs for years and they gave me good reliable service, on a good reliable grunty little engine. Flirty, the best thing to come up with would be a budget. From there you can decide what path you want to take. 5K is a good option, but if you want to do the 4K (nothing wrong with that), there's no secrets, and a good rebuild can be done for not that much (comparitively).

 

Carbies are up to you, but if you have the twins, why not use them. If you don't like them, get a DGAV off a Cortina. Food for thought.

we what i want from my engine is decent power, not excessive as its not like I'm going to be putting it down the drag strip or nothing, and I'm not really a "fast" driver, so i really just want a reliable motor that is guna get me from a to b, BUT i want to have the power there for when i need it :D

 

and as for my budget, I'm starting a second job in 2 weeks, so i will have about $600 a month to spend on my car, keeping in mind that my car is stock standard atm and needs a lot of other things done to it aswell ie wheels, paint interior.... (the list goes on & on...)

 

ive set myself a goal finsih date of 30th september this year, I'm hoping that everything will be finished besides the paint by then.

yes....the 5K does have hydro lifters, HOWEVER.

 

you can change them quite easily to solid using holden 6 lifters, you will need to change the rocker gear over to 4K (so you can adjust them), and probably sort out some shorter pushrods. i ended up using datsun a 12 pushrods, that was with my 3k bigport head.

I have just put a 5k with the big port head into my ke30 and would never go back to a 4k. The motor cost me $2000 fully assembled. If you want some power, then the 5k is the way to go. Its got more torque than the 4k, so it pulls alot harder.

My driveline is standard and as yet i havent broken anything yet. I have a single DGAV weber off a 2Litre and has been reliable - yet not very efficient. In a few weeks i'm changing over to the twin carb sprinter setup, so hopefully i can have a bit more to say on that topic in the near future.

My 5k is pulling roughly 130hp and 120lb-ft of torque. (calculated from dyno software - which concurs with the engine builder, as his 5k used to pull around 140hp mark.

So i guess what i'm trying to say is, Ditch the 4k and grab a 5k.

Sorry - I forgot to add this. It might help answer the question about the lifters.

The standard hydraulic 5k cam can be reground to a solid cam spec, with a nice set of holden lifters to match.

I used to find that my worked 4k was worse to drive than the 5k. The 4k had bugger all power down low (eg. under 2700rpm), but then it pulled hard from then right up to 6000rpm.

The 5k has power right from the second you leave the lights.

 

Engine Specs are as follows:

- Large port, big valve head. Double valve springs.

- Gemini Pistons 82mm Bore. Hypertec Pistons machined to reduce compression to 9.5:1

- Datsun 1200 pushrods

- Fully Balanced

- Double row timing chain

- Crow solid cam and lifters (Lifters are Holden brand. Apparently the 6cyl, 8cyl and chev types are all pretty much the same). Apparently??

- King Bearings

- Hastings Rings

- Standard conrods and crank.

- 12" high powered thermo fan. Davies Craig brand.

- 3 Row radiator

doing it from scratch you'd need to spend alot more than a grand :D that will get you a decent head and a set of bearings and gaskets

 

seriously, i think bigport heads, and 3k heads in general are overrated. most are that old now they're f@$ked and rusty. you need to spend cash getting new valve guides, valve seats recut, rust welded up, maybe helicoils fixed. for the amount of money you can spend to have a stock 3k bigport, you could have taken your current 4k head off and got the shit worked out of it with a proper port job and bigger valves, which is going to shit all over a 3k bigport

 

if i did my motor again, no way i'd bother with the bigport
