Toyota Hemi V8

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I am just in the early planning and thinking stages for a conversion and I came across the Toyota Hemi V8. There is one on evilBay for $4500 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Toyota-Hemi-3-4L-V8...1QQcmdZViewItem , and my main question was is this a realistic price for one of these motors? I would have thought that the 1UZFe would have been more desirable and therefore the more expensive motor. Also, how common are these things these days, as I am having a lot of trouble finding info on them on the net? Do many importers carry them?

Lastly, are they a very good choice of powerplant. I vaguely remember seeing one in Street Machine years ago and they said it had really small external dimensions, but that is about the extent of my knowledge of them.

I hope that is not too many questions on the wrong forum, but any info would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

The 1UZFE is probably a better motor, from most accounts, has 32 valves, later models have VVTI, and can take boost. Early soarer non VVTI ones generally cost around $1000 from the importers, or $1500-1800 for a half cut, VVTI you'll be spending probably 2-3 times that.

The reason that motor is exxy is the fact that it's been worked, big cam and forged pistons. They're still an old motor though, 2V, OHC. Will be torquey as hell, but probably won't compare to a 1UZ at full song.

If you're putting it in a small car the 3.4L might be the best way to go for legalities, but the 1UZ is a superior motor.

$$$ might be rarity too? 1UZFEs are common as these days

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about sticking one in a KE55, I may still do a bit of a ring around wreckers/importers to gather some more info. A 2.6 litre version should almost make it through rego, maybe?!? Not too interested in making it a massive ball tearer at this stage, but I would like to make an E85 only motor (15:1 compression, alcohol carb) just so that I might be able to have my cake and eat it too! Thanks

I hear Cosworth are selling off some surplus F1 V8s... 2.4 litres should pass engineering. Shame they're a bit over $100,000 for a "used" one.

Hmmm... Food for thought. I reckon you are on the right track, but instead of the Cosworth motor, I think I will go for a Top Fuel Hemi. At around $60,000 for one of these I have a bit of change left over. This will tie in nicely with the whole hemi theme as well. Will be no problems with rego either, because if I have got 8000 horsepower, if they can catch me they can have me!!

Does anyone know how to stop a KE55 from twisting through 180 degrees along it's length?

All a hemi motor is, is just one that has a spark tube and the plug is in the middle of the head pointing vertical... almost every modern motor available these days(minus push rod v8's), It's not the wet dream fantasy they were new back in the 60's.

You buy the cosworth V8 irokin and I'll supply a corolla shell for it :D

OK I'll supply the motor and you can supply everything else to run it. Heheh I think I got the cheapest bit

Most modern DOHC motors are actually pent roof

The 2T is a hemi, head design is real simple. get and orange, cut it in half.

Jordan

Its an actual hemisperical chamber though which gives a better burn. Valve angle is ridiculous though hence the fat heads!

i dunno about that

three shortcomings are:

1 no quench area

2 a large flame front meaning lots of advance required

3 large domes required for significant static CR meaning interference in the chamber shape

theres also an increase in the total combustion chamber area and flame travel which is a big reason why modern engines have narrow angle heads, even the very high performing ones.

If you want to know what works best check out a motorbike head.
