charl Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 hi all i have a good one for you guys this time! :D ok, so heres the story. ragin has started acting up again. first thing in the morning at about 5am when I'm going to work she starts first pop everyday, then at about 1130am when i am leaving work to come home she starts fine again. later on in the arvo when i wanna go to the shops or something i try to turn her over and the starter motor sounds like it having heaps of trouble trying to turn the crank. i turn the key and nothing at first but i hold the key on and very slowly itll give one revolution then wait a bit and then another and if I'm lucky itll start on one of these slow revolutions. but then in the morning when i wanna leave for work she starts like there is nothing wrong..... i am thinking maybe my starter otor is on its way out, but if this is the case then why good in the morning, crap in the arvo. (mind you the arvo is also when my partner is in the car with me so maybe ragin just doesnt like her?.... :lovin: ) so please help me people, i need to get the mechanics of my car sorted. Quote
Raven Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Checked out the cells in the battery? Sometimes these cars need a relay fitted to the starter motor so they crank over properly. If you need a starter motor, let me know. I have a decent one here :D Quote
charl Posted July 2, 2008 Author Report Posted July 2, 2008 i know its not the battery, brand newie! cost me enough too.... as for the starter motor, i think that would be the safest bet. ill let you knpw how it goes starting this morning when i get out there to go to work. (its 0437am) Quote
charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 so, had a little trouble starting this morning. and just before when i went to start it to come home from work, (stupid 4 hour shifts...), i turned the key and nothing. it makes like a click noise and nothing else. one of the guys offered to give me a jumpstart which if I'm correct wouldnt work if the starter motor was buggered but it turned over first time. battery is brand new and has this display thingie on it which says if its green battery is 50 - 100% charged, if its black recharge and if its clear buy a new battery. its green, same as the day i bought it. noticed a fair bit of corrosion around the positive battery terminal though and am going to clean them right now to see if this makes a difference. still if anyone has any ideas please let me know asap as this is my daily and i gotta get to work everyday!! thanks people charl Quote
charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 well i just cleaned the terminals and then tried to crank it over again, but no luck! it turned over heaps slowly and would not start so i kept trying and then i noticed some smoke coming out of the bonnet so i quickly had a look and my clutch cable had gotten so hot that it was smoking, naturally i touched it and burnt my fingers but i also noticed that it was so hot that the plastic coating on it had gone really soft, almost to the point where you could just rub it off. so now ive got the battery on charge, just in case that was it, and i am feeling rather frustrated. PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY!!!!!! sorry, let me just compose myself for a minute........ any help would be greatly appreciated!! Quote
Taz_Rx Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 My friend I think you just learnt how important decent earthing of your motor is!!!!!! The only reason why I can think that the ckutch cable is getting hot is the motor is using this as an earth strap!!! To clarify this quickly, use some jumper leads to temporaraly earth the motor to the chassis. Should know striaght away through the speed the engine turns over at. :D Quote
Xany Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 (edited) Sounds like you have an earthing issue then....if your clutch cable? was hot.....means its trying to earth through that to the car body. Check all your earth wires leading away from the block to the body to see if they are all still there and clean. The clicking you heard this morning is because of the voltage drop between the battery and starter motor when trying to start (i think).....hooking up a relay will help this problem. rofl....looks like we are thinkin the same thing taz. charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 (edited) ok then! thanks. does this mean my clutch cable is now deaded? I'm really starting to hate my rolla....sniff! oh and how do you hook up the relay? sorry for being so clueless! Edited July 3, 2008 by charl Quote
Xany Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 (edited) Have a search for starter relay. i think theres a topic with a howto As for the clutch cable.....you may have to replace it if the plastic has melted into the sheath....it could bind up. But if it still works and feels fine i wouldnt worry about it too much. Starter relay thread here: http://www.rollaclub.com/board/?showtopic=17660 link in the thread to go to a site with more info. charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 thank you for all your help! hopefully i can get this sorted out before monday!! ill keep you guys posted. Quote
charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 good news i think!! so i cleaned all the earthing connections, (the one to the body and the one to the engine), unbolted them and sanded them and then put them back where i found them. then tried the paseos battery just to see if it was the battery, turned over really fast and strong. so then i put my battery back in and yup, started first pop. so for the moment it seems that i have solved the problem. i will definitely keep these areas in mind as part of my routine maintenance!! i never realised that these things were so important and that i had to keep an eye on them! as for the relay to the starter motor, i think there is one already connected to it. anyway, thanks for all your help guys, i love this forum!! regards charl Quote

Sounds from your post you might have two as well, but I thought it was worth checking :D Quote
charl Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 Thanks mate ill definitely check it out and give the other one the sand paper treatment as well!! Quote
strola Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 Sanding or cleaning the earthing point to roar metal again will work for a period. IF you wish to keep it more permanent the look at coating the area to keep the air out. Vaseline (petroleum jelly) works well for this and is conductive too. I also use this on my battery terminals and the fuse block to stop unnecessary oxidization/corrosion. Good to hear it is up and running again though... :) Cheers Quote
