so i thought i was getting a cam but.. i went down to my local parts shop yesterday, and asked them to see if they could get me a lumpy cam and a lightned flywheel for my wagon,

 

and i went in today to see what they had found out and they said they can't get any flywheels or cams for my type of car.... i was off it,

 

so whats the go??? where can i get a lumpy cam?? surely you can get them made for any car i would of thought...?

 

or do i have to get mine machined?

 

and same with the flywheel, i was pretty keen to fork out the cash for a custom lightned one but apparently thats a no go aswell...!

 

somewere in adelaide must do them..hmmm?

yes it will spin up faster which will make the car faster, its one of the best bang for buck mods you can do, especially to a small revy motor. it wont make more horsepower, but it will get there faster.

yes they do explode, but rarely and only when the people that lighten them are going to the limits and take too much out in the wrong places.

ive heard of one apprentice machining one who lost it on the lathe!

took heaps of meat out near the bolt holes. idiotic because

A. its the highest stress point.

B. the most effective weight you remove is from the outmost point, rotating mass etc...

C. imagine how thin it has to be losing it on the lathe, imagine if it had gone back into a car!

 

so be careful who does the work.

 

custom flywheels are like, incredibly light and would be pricks to drive, especially with a cam.

 

if it were me, id talk to the shop u want to do it, and see if they think they shoud balance the whole motor as an assembly, i know mine got done that way, but it was all getting machined and balanced anyway, I'm not sure whether its necessary or not.

Might accelerate a bit harder, but it'll be a feeble difference with corollas power to weight.

take it to gold coast engine rebuilders if u can get the flywheel out ur self they only charge you $54 and they do a really good job

id love to see before and after quarter mile results, or more importantly 60 ft and 1/8th mile times.

i think it would be worth it :)

JUN in Japan make a K motor light flywheel retail for $1200 can get off there web page.

 

As for cam I go to a cam grinder in Brisbane $100 I supply cam he grinds to what ever I want bang it back in the car easy.

 

So if a machine shop can lighten one for $50 then cam is $100 should be cheap mods easy to do.

 

Also below are some photos of swiss cheese I found a picture of. Is a stock flywheel for a K motor lightened etc. This was run on a 5K with SC14 only ran because a blower acts like a flywheel other wise it was so light the motor pretty much didn't run. Was a mean machine photos below of front and back of flywheel. It was cad plated after machining.

I think its a custom machined piece. I don't think anyone dare machine down a cast flywheel that much. The ring gear will probably be machined off an OEM flywheel and pressed onto this one.

 

Cutting gears is a pain in the arse!

so i guess ill be getting everythink machined then...

 

I'm thinking that lightning the flywheel is going to let it rev alot higher and pick up speed a little bit quiker so in that case it will go slightly quiker...

Remember seeing pictures of a flywheel that let go on an R33 gtst. Had a pressed on ring gear that straightened out and went through the engine bay like a steel whip!! Wasn't pretty. That one of the reasons I like the cast ring gear on a K flywheel. :yes:

No, there's a change in flywheels between KE30->KE55 from memory. The 4K flywheel is lighter than the earlier 3K flywheels. Not sure about 5K.

hmmm, anyone clarify the differences? I've got a couple around the place I just assumed they're all the same?
