Hey guys, I've been thinking about this for a while now.

 

When I had my orange KE20 for sale a few months ago, a guy came to look at it with his dad. The father told me that these type of whitewalls are in fact illegal as they cut out part of the tyre to do them.

 

Now I have had whitewalls or redwalls on various cars over the past two years, and have known many, many cars with walls done by the same bloke and have had no problems with SAPOL at all.

 

What are your thoughts on this, and has anyone else heard the same thing?

Ring your local cop shop and ask them what the law is.

Eh I'm not really fussed, I myself or anyone I've known have had no problems. That was the first I've heard of it

I do not know about legal stuff.

 

But my first car was a well used KE70 and it came with whitewall tyres - I was very upset at the time when I had to replace the tyres and could not find whitewalls. (1907's)

if you really wanna know ring the RTA, if not, i doubt you would get pinged for it.

how much meat do they take out of the tyre?

They rough the tyre surface so the paint bonds properly, the dude is just another 2-bit expert, tell him to bite it,

From the SA legislation:

 

54—Tyre tread

(1) A tyre on a motor vehicle must not have cleats or other gripping devices that could

damage road surfaces.

(2) Except at tread wear indicators, a tyre fitted to the vehicle must have a tread pattern at

least 1.5 millimetres deep in a band that runs continuously:

(a) across:

(i) for a vehicle with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes—at least 75% of the tyre

width that normally comes into contact with the road; or

(ii) for another vehicle—the tyre width that normally comes into contact

with the road; and

(b) around the whole circumference of the tyre.

(3) A vehicle must not be fitted with a tyre that has been treated by recutting or

regrooving the tread rubber, unless the tyre was:

(a) constructed with an extra thickness of rubber designed for recutting or

regrooving; and

(b) labelled to indicate the construction

 

Now strictly speaking they're talking about the tread area, however you could read it as being the external surface of the tyre.

but if they are only roughing the surface its no more than running into a gutter.

i don't know how much they take out of the tyre? is an actual groove or just a rough up?

the white walls that have the side walls cut out for the paint are illegal over here in NZ also. because someting bout reducing the structural intregity of the tyre itself. if we get them imported from the use (just for instance) they have to be DOT approved or have some type of saftey standard otherwise they also are illegal.

nooo not my lil 20 ben!

i've got a set of these painted-on white walls on my 20 and so far as i can tell all they do is shave/rub off the raised lettering so that they have a flat surface to paint on. there appears no cutting into the side wall at all.

I personally wouldn't want anything cut into my tyres.. the sidewalls will have a bit of stress on them. If they are only roughing up then I don't see too much of a problem. But yes, I think Redwarf has got the idea. Need to ring up your Transport people.

My whitewall tyres had a raised groove which Whitewalls SA cut into leaving the tyre face all level...

Yeah thats pretty much it Will, they don't actually 'cut' into the tyre itself, just shave away a bit of the surface so its flat.

 

I thought it'd be a lot of bullshit, but wanted to see what you guys thought.
